French Expressionism "A Vase of Flowers" Gen Paul (French, 1895-1975)
By Gen Paul
Located in SANTA FE, NM
"A Vase of Flowers" Eugene Paul aka Gen Paul (French, 1895-1975) Oil crayon on paper 20 1/2 x 14 (28 x 21 1/2 frame) inches "Gen Paul is undoubtedly the greatest representative, and perhaps the only, expressionist of the French tradition". - Gazette Drouot, 1995 Eugene Paul, known as Gen Paul, was born in 1895 and raised in the bohemian atmosphere of Montmartre in Paris. In his life he came to know a great many of the artists, from the anonymous to the world famous, who established themselves in the neighborhood. A self-taught artist, Gen Paul began expressing himself in drawings and paintings as a child; his earliest works show a remarkable talent. He was apprenticed to a wallpaper hanger until his life was interrupted by war. He was wounded twice in World War One, and the second time he lost one of his legs. During his recovery, he turned to painting, which became his passion and his livelihood for almost 60 years. In Paris, Gen Paul exhibited at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Indépendants beginning in 1920. In 1928 he exhibited fifty paintings...

Ben-Zion (Ukraine, 1897-1987) circa 1930's "Floral Still with White Vase"
By Ben-Zion
Located in SANTA FE, NM
Floral Still Life Ben-Zion (Ukraine, 1897-1987) Circa 1930's Oil on Canvas, signed l.r. 17 3/4 x 12 5/8 One of the founding artists of Abstract Expressionism, hailing from Ukraine, Ben-Zion Weinman arrived in the United States in 1920 after the end of World War l. In America, he became Ben-Zion because to drag around two names was “rather too difficult.” Ben-Zion was an accomplished, self-taught artist who worked in oils and watercolors. Additionally, Ben-Zion left behind a large body of ironwork. In 1935 he became a founding member of The Ten-a group of artists advancing the concepts of abstraction and expressionism who exhibited together until 1940-along with Mark Rothko, Adolph Gottlieb, and others. Critics immediately began taking notice with an article from the New York Sun...

Still Life of Flowers in Ornamental Urn on Ledge - Dutch Old Master oil painting
By Gerard van Spaendonck
Located in London, GB
This superb vibrant Dutch 18th century Old Master floral oil painting is attributed to circle of Gerard Van Spaendonck. Painted circa 1790, it is a beautiful mixed floral still life flower arrangement in an ornate urn on a marble ledge against a landscape. The flowers include roses, tulips, blue iris and trailing blue morning glory. The carved ornate grey/blue urn on the cream marble ledge create a strong textural contrast with the soft petals and leaves. This is a wonderful example of Dutch 18th century floral oil paintings with fine detail and brushwork. Provenance. Private Collection, UK (by descent). Condition. Oil on canvas, 30 inches by 25 inches unframed and in good condition. Frame. Housed in an ebonised frame, 39 by 34 inches framed and in good condition. Gerard van Spaendonck (1746-1822) was a Dutch painter. Gerard was born in Tilburg, an older brother of Cornelis van Spaendonck...

"Still life of Flowers Bouquet on Alabaster" circa 1820's
By Pierre-Joseph Redouté
Located in SANTA FE, NM
"Still life of Flower Bouquet on Alabaster" circa 1820's Gouache on alabaster 6 1/2 x 4 1/2 (12 3/4 x 10 3/4 frame) inches Follower of Pierre Joseph Redouté 1759-1840, the artist brought all the finesse and care required for this work to seduce us and hold our attention at first glance, delicately painted in gouache on an alabaster plate, he added here and there a drop of water which adds freshness to the whole while showing us his virtuosity. A white rose, a parrot tulip and a few forget-me-nots to enhance the composition and the harmonious bouquet bursts with gaiety against a background of luminous alabaster. Unsigned, this gouache dates from the years 1820 - 1830, it is enhanced by a channel frame which has retained its original gilding. Redouté was an official court artist of Marie Antoinette, and continued painting through the French Revolution and Reign of Terror. He survived the turbulent political upheaval to gain international recognition for his precise renderings of plants, which remain as fresh in the early 21st century as when first painted. He combined great artistic skills with a pleasing, ingratiating personality which assisted him with his influential patrons. After Queen Marie-Antoinette, his patrons included both of Napoleon's wives -- Empress Joséphine and Marie Louise, Duchess of Parma—as well as Maria Amalia...
