Rose Cabat Studio Ceramic Signed Weed Pot or “Feelie”
By Rose Cabat
Located in Phoenix, AZ
This Rose Cabat (1914-2015) glazed porcelain weed pot bears her traditional “feelie” soft glaze with large drips showing near the base. Measures: 3.75" H x 2.75" D. Mint condition. No damage. Signed CABAT Rose Cabat (1914-2015) was an American studio ceramicist, known for her innovative glazes upon small porcelain pots called ‘feelies.’ She was born in 1914 and met her eventual husband Erni when they were schoolchildren in New York City in the 1920s, marrying in 1936. Erni worked in advertising and apprenticed for Austrian potter and sculptor Vally Wieselthier. One day, Erni brought a lump of clay home to the apartment that he shared with Rose. This simple act sparked a passion that continued unabated for the rest of her life. After making a simple coiled vase from the clay, Rose learned wheel throwing at Greenwich House Pottery, teaching herself to work on a kick wheel. When their son’s asthma prompted the family to move from New York to Tucson, Arizona, Erni built Rose an unassuming studio on the dusty streets outside town that Rose referred to as a “shack.” He obtained a potter’s wheel made from a converted washing machine and she used a tractor seat for a stool. Life intervened in the form of a growing family, World War II, and a job as a riveter on an Air Force base, but Rose persisted. In 1957, she attended a five-week glaze course offered by the art department at the University of Hawaii. In this course, she was exposed to modern studio ceramics...

St. Ives Pottery Large Studio Bowl
By St. Ives Pottery
Located in Phoenix, AZ
This ceramic bowl was created at the St. Ives Pottery founded by Bernard Leech. Measures: 5" H x 12" D A wonderful large ceramic bowl in excellent condition bearing the St. Ives monogram. No signature is seen so the particular artist for this piece is unknown to us. Earthy outside glaze with creamy interior decorated with a floral motif. Leach Pottery at St. Ives In 1920 Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada set up a pottery at St Ives in Cornwall. Leach and Hamada were like-minded and worked well together. Their ideal was a fusion of arts-and-crafts principles and a desire to make pots of Classic, simple beauty. Hamada returned to Japan in 1928, but frequently visited St Ives. The pottery was home to a succession of students and apprentices that almost comprise a complete who's who of Studio Pottery with Michael Cardew heading the list. The post-war years brought success and critical acclaim to the studio. Leach continued potting until 1972 with the help of William Marshall, his very first apprentice, and died in 1979. The pottery remained open under the direction of Bernard's wife, Janet Leach...
