Artificial Paradises
Paradise is an enclosure created by man. It is a place of perfection in nature, of reconciliation with our origin, of serenity towards our near reality. Paradises are there, waiting for us. We earn them sometimes, and some other times we are expelled from them and then their very existence becomes a reproach. Paradises are not ephemeral, though. All that belongs to Nature is ephemeral and boundless at the same time. It remains until the infinite and returns to the beginning to wither again and so on, over and over. Paradise escapes us, it slips out in our imagination of what it is. It disappears and then, just like everything we cannot hold, like everything vanishing away from our desire for grasping, it must be replicated, frozen in time, imitated at best, never to be lost again. We contemplate it in all its confines, we study it and scrutinise all its forms, line by line, each with different colours and nuances. We thus hold on to the ephemeral, we stop its decadence, we perpetuate beauty in our urge to negate its own death.
The paradise reverts to the logic of the quest. Maybe the last voyage ever to be undertaken is that of defining a paradise through sheer technical mastery, through the use of an apparent wisdom, a meticulous ability to reproduce reality: to create some sort of artificial paradise, a world where everything is reproducible and interminable, and so all appears at last to be perfectly docile and tame. To believe in the absolute harmlessness of such a paradise. And very likely to open up an abyss afresh, a new irony (tragic o comic or perhaps both at the same time) about each petal of each of its artificial flowers, made in the image and according to the likeness of reality.
Artificial Paradises intends to be a very own and concrete paradise in a very specific location. The tradition of reproduction/imitation in Asia forms part of its culture. The tenacious aim for perfection, or for the idea of perfection held about things, blurs the confine between what is and its perfect imitation. In Asia the electric colours of the artificial plants...

Gaulino Easy Chair by Oscar Tysquets black lacquered ashwood, contemporary
By Oscar Tusquets Blanca
Located in Barcelona, ES
“The challenge was to design a light armchair, not too high, using wood and leather. At the beginning, it was going in a different direction, but after making various models, prototypes and considering BD’s design team’s different perspectives on the matter, the result has inevitably drawn toward what is now the Gaulino chair, which was designed nearly 30 years ago. We did not envision it so, but the ergonomics and the aesthetic coherence of this piece has taken us toward a solution much like the Gaulino chair, an heiress of Gaudí and Mollino, and have decided to conserve the name.” OSCAR TUSQUETS

Concept
The Metamorphosis collection seeks to enhance the emotional bond to our surrounding environment. During the Coronavirus outbreak Podracký returned to Prague his home town and spent a couple of months in a quarantine in his studio there. Access to materials was minimal but he turned this handicap into a research opportunity and started to work only with material found around the studio or that were easy to access, such as wood, textiles, trash such as old car parts, old ceramic pieces or broken glass sheets. Tadeáš realized that these materials had a certain authenticity and so began reevaluating the way he approached the materiality, challenging himself to dis-acknowledge deeply rooted principles of formal design, interrupting established practices of conventional construction methods. The designer was seeking the authenticity of expression and changed his design methodology based on the intuitive use of materials and emotional decisions regarding structure, shape and the construction process. The aim was to let the object grow through his hands by gluing and combining different elements, reminiscent of the process of a bird...

Solid cast brass with polished finish.
A company that has always attributed such great importance to the author of the designs could never forget the great figures in history. That is why the BD catalogue of contemporary creations has always included those by admired classical masters. Antoni Gaudí (1852/1926) is, without doubt, the most internationally well-known Spanish architect. But is not only his buildings and brilliant architectural solutions that have travelled the globe. His integrated conception of architecture led him to pay attention, not only to structural calculations, but also to all the decorative elements, including furniture, that would form part of the building. The admiration felt by modern designers for the furniture designed by Gaudí has not gone unnoticed by BD which was the first company to rescue them from history by embarking on their serial production using...
