Chinese Pottery Ceramic Glazed Mud Figure of Court Lady Tang Dynasty with Stand
Located in Studio City, CA
Simply gorgeous and so delicately and beautifully made. This work has been molded in a whitish, dense terracotta, typical of the region of the capital of Luoyang, and then lightly glazed. We are not sure how to date this work. We believe, based on comparisons, that this piece could date as far back as the Tang dynasty (though we are not experts and have not had this verified by one. Again, this is not our area of expertise). The white terracotta and glaze appear correct as does the figures stately pose and elaborate hairstyle which was a characteristic feature of Tang pottery women. The people of ancient China believed that some part of the essence and life force of a human being was contained in the hair. Much time and effort went into this to create elaborate coiffures that the woman proudly displayed when in public. The Tang dynasty is also the only period in Chinese History to have known a female sovereign, The Empress Wu Zetian (625-706). Comes with Lucite display stand...

Rare Japanese Ceramic Glazed Bowl Makuzu Kozan Meiji Period
By Makuzu Kozan
Located in Atlanta, GA
On offer is a rare ceramic bowl with overglazed design by the famed Japanese ceramic artist Makuzu Kozan (1842-1916), circa 1906-1916. The bowl is rather unusual from the potter's repertoire with its unique glaze colors and decoration, and it likely belonged to a small series that Kozan made in and after 1906. A bowl of similar glaze and nearly identical dragon motif was recorded as a diplomatic present to the British royalty Arthur Connaught (1883-1932) when he represented King Gorge V in Japan in 1906. Other pieces, such as this bowl, were likely made with similar materials and designs afterwards. Essentially round in form, the bowl has a generous volume with six harmonious lobes. The bottom of the interior showcases a coiled dragon in red, green and gold slithering on a cobalt blue background. The roundel shares an echoing lobed perimeter, which is further outlined by red and turquois bands and rising sun design. The exterior of the bowl features six stylized Japanese camellias...

Japanese Ceramic Vase by Ito Tozan I Meiji Period
By Ito Tozan I
Located in Atlanta, GA
This stoneware vase of a jar form was finely decorated with low relief carving and delicate colored glazes depicting bundles of peony flowers. It was made by Ito Tozan I (1846-1920) circa 1890-1900s in the late Meiji Period. The color pallet was both bold and subtle, with dark green and rusty leaves with golden outlines and white and light yellow peony petals covering much of the surface. Impressed with potter's mark on the base. Examples of two pieces by Ito Tozan I were in the collection of MNAAG (Guimet) Paris. Inventory no. MG 13790 an 13792. A vase with similar shape and decoration techniques is featured as Lot 1340 Fine Japanese Art, 13 Sep 2017 Bonhams New York Tozan Ito I established his ceramic business in Kyoto 1867. Set of Five Yohen-Kin Shino Ceramic Plates by Suzuki Tomio
Located in Atlanta, GA
Japanese ceramic Suzuki Tomio (born in 1948) specializes in Shino ware. In 2003, he successfully developed Yohen-kin or transformed gold Shino, an opulent and golden glaze which led to a number of luster glazes in the artist’s growing body of work. Inspired by the golden tea ceremony room in Osaka Castle commissioned by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-1598) where honored guests were served tea from a glittering bowl coated with pure gold, it took the artist nearly a decade of experimentation and refinement to achieve the glaze while strictly adhering to traditional shino making techniques. This set of five Yohen-kin plates displays a lustrous transformation. Signed on the bottom of plates. With original wrap cloth and the storage tomobako box entitled and signed by the artist in Kanji, with additional red seal. The size of the box is 5-1/8 x 8-1/4 x 8-1/4 inches. Many of Suzuki Tomio's shino pottery...
