City Farmhouse

Family Home by Solis Betancourt & Sherrill in Washington, DC

The goal of this project was to renovate a 1930’s farmhouse style home in Washington DC and turn it into a family friendly home that feels like a retreat from city living. While the home is in the middle of DC, it is surrounded by woods and parkland and the extensive property includes vegetable gardens, bee hives and bat houses- and a large pool. The clients have a collection of Americana furnishings, sculpture and paintings, which include the atmospheric colors of Wolf Kahn’s impressionistic paintings and the whimsy of Grandma Moses’ works. We kept the traditional farmhouse style, but chose a light and cheerful color palette. We wanted to keep the interiors light and airy and aimed for an almost shaker simplicity in some rooms. The client loves light blues and lavenders. Paul Sherrill chose to use blue doors throughout the house to create a repeating architectural feature.
