Historic Contemporary

Family Home by Frank Ponterio Interior Design in Chicago, IL

Designed in 1937 by Nathaniel Owings, this landmark home with its open, inviting interiors and large picture windows is still modern today. However, over the years, decorating choices had lessened the timelessness of the space. Frank's objective was to remain sensitive to the home’s historical significance while incorporating an updated aesthetic that celebrated its contemporary heritage. Ponterio sought to bring the rooms up to date without destroying the underlying structure and introduced custom furnishings and millwork that created further architectural interest. A warm palette, rich textures, colorful artwork and accessories were used to play with the openness of the home, creating spaces that evoked elegance and comfort. Additionally, use of fabric on walls and doors not only softened the home’s contemporary lines but also provided enhanced acoustics.
