Vashon Island Farmhouse

Country House by The Residency Bureau in Vashon, WA

A short, 15-minute ferry ride across the Puget Sound you’ll find Vashon Island. Here, my client’s farmhouse is tucked smack dab in the center of the island surrounded by acres of orchards, artist enclaves, and working farms of all types.

This idyllic setting doesn’t exactly conjure up images of glass block showers and bulky jacuzzi tubs. That was the scene of this 1990 farmhouse. My challenge was to infuse the home with the kind of character and charm you’d find in a 100-year-old farmhouse. A mix of old and new. Funky and unexpected. An appreciation for details and touches that tell a bigger story.

With its monochromatic color palette, the primary bathroom became a masterclass in texture -- plaster walls, terracotta floors, and zellige tiles. The living finishes on the plumbing fixtures will continue to patina beautifully to match that of an old farmhouse. The ultimate character-driven statement comes from a 1900 French counter used as our vanity.

In contrast with the primary bathroom, the powder room tells a dark and moody story filled with intrigue. A cast-iron sink, barn light pendants and country-style faucet give a nod to the farm but are juxtaposed with the star tiles and walnut floating vanity. The soapstone counter and cement tiles will continue to improve with age.

Today, my clients have two completely remodeled bathrooms that stretch from soft and airy to dark and moody. By using rich textures and striking finishes, I created an eclectic blend of rustic character layered with modern surprises that’s as familiar as it is transportive.
