Jean Després
He was born in 1889 in Souvigny, Burgundy, from glass blower parents, Jean Després starts his apprenticeship with a Parisian goldsmith, friend of the family, in 1905. First an industrial drawer for the military aviation during World War I, he took over his parents’ shop in 1920 and launched his goldsmith and jeweler workshop. He revealed himself to be an innovative creator with a unique way to work metals, and with new drawn shapes never seen before. He participated to his first show in 1926 at the Salon des Indépendants. Many shows and exhibitions then followed, such as the Salon d’Automne, the Salon of Decorative artists, and the Tuileries Salon. Jean Després chooses massive shapes rather than the classical goldsmith ornaments and avoids the use of precious gemstones in his jewel collection. His jewel production is defined by necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings where metals are combined with ivory, lacquer, ebony, onyx and sharkskin. His goldsmith pieces are inspired by the aviation aesthetic, crafted using hammered metals, and ample, generous and modern shapes. In the 1940’s, Jean Després is nominated President of the Goldsmith Syndicate, after receiving the Legion d'honneur, in 1938. This piece has been attributed based upon archived research including online sources, vintage documentation and catalogs, designer literature, and other materials however, it is not signed or marked in any way. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, there is some water spotting throughout the aluminum. Please see photos, zoom in for details, and see long description as they are part of the condition report. Get ready for a little SIZZLE in your SWIVEL with these incredible vintage swivel lounge chairs by Russell Woodard!!! This pair of beauties are comprised of sculptured polished aluminum frames and handsome chrome pedestal bases. Their curved backs sweep down and around to form the arms in a rather curvaceous bucket shape. The bucket seat is perched atop a fabulous chrome swivel base. Yes… we know… most of these Woodard aluminum tulip-shaped chairs have the same aluminum base patterned as the bucket seat and can be used outside; however, this set has the original pedestal chromed base that would not be suitable for the out of doors. They will, however, be very suitable and look wonderful in your sunroom, living room, family room, entryway, bedroom, or any room you choose! Plus… we do have one back cushion to use as a pattern for the back cushion which we will provide upon purchase. These fabulous barrel swivel chairs are the epitome of mid-century modern magnificence and are sure to make a fashionable statement in your home!!!
For over 150 years, Woodard has been one of the industry leaders in classic outdoor patio furniture design, manufacturing, and distribution. They are committed to building modern outdoor to timeless classic outdoor and patio furniture. Lyman E Woodard purchased a lumber mill in Owosso, Michigan in 1866 and he and his three brothers founded Woodard Brothers which was a company that manufactured wood furniture, window blinds, door and window sashes, and caskets. In 1882 they created a second company called The Owosso Casket Company and in 1890 Lyman bought his brothers out of that company. Between 1890 and 1900 Lyman’s three sons and his son-in-law joins the business and in 1902 Woodard Brothers opened a planning mill and two more factories in order to make shipping more convenient. Lyman Woodard passed away in 1904 and his three sons and his son-in-law take over. In 1934 due to the Great Depression there was a depletion of hardwood and pine, so the company switched from caskets to making metal outdoor furniture...

William Schwartz was born in Smorgon, Russia, in 1896, one of nine children in a poor family. He studied art at an early age, earning a scholarship at the Vilna Art School in Russia, 1908–12. He immigrated to the United States at age 17 in 1913, living in New York with his sister for eight months and then moving to Omaha, Nebraska, to live with his brother in 1915. Working as a house painter, he turned his attention to art, studying briefly with J. Laurie Wallace at the Kellom School in Omaha before moving to Chicago. He entered the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) in 1916, studying with Ivan Trutnev and Karl A. Buehr, and graduating with honors in life drawing, portraiture, and painting in 1917. He supported himself as a tenor singer in vaudeville, concerts, and opera and received favorable reviews, but he chose to pursue painting instead of singing. A large and wonderful Modernist still life of a cast iron pot, squash and ladle by artist Flora Schofield. Framed to 24" x 26".
A painter, print maker and sculptor, Flora Schofield (Schoenfield), was born in Lanark, Illinois. She studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and taught Saturday classes there until 1904. Schoenfield also studied with Charles Hawthorne, B.J.O Nordfeldt and William Zorach in Provincetown, Massachusetts. She studied with Albert Gleizes, Fernand Leger and Natalia Goncharova in Paris, France.
In 1923, Schofield’s abstractions caused a split at the venerable Chicago Society of Artists. When her artwork was was accepted by the jury, the notable Impressionist painter Pauline Palmer and the notable Modernist painter Carl Hoeckner got into a row that ended-up splitting the group. The Impressionists then broke away into their own organization called the ”Association of Chicago Painters and Sculptors”.
