Duayne Hatchett was a visual artist whose work included prints, paintings, sculpture, and found objects. He was born on May 12, 1925 in Shawnee, Oklahoma. He enlisted in the Air Force where he trained to become a fighter pilot. After leaving the militrary he studied design at the University of Oklahoma. His highly technical military training combined a mathematical intelligence with a love for physics and a daring embrace of new experience, all of which would soon be the tools for his evolution through art.
Two major influences interacted on his early development at OU. Emelio Omero, a colleague and close friend of Diego Rivera, introduced him to the revolutionary art ideas of Mexico City, while teaching him a wide range of printing techniques that would culminate in a Masters Degree in Painting in 1952. During this time he met Bruce Goff, a renowned Wright disciple, who was teaching architecture at OU and befriended Hatchett, introducing him to the most avant-garde architecture of that time.
He spent his summers while at OU designing for a small sign shop, which introduced him to new materials used for building neon, plastic, and metal signs. The use of new materials and a keen sense for design would soon become invaluable building blocks for future sculpture. During this time he met and married Mary Ellen Jeffries. They would spend their lives together and raise three children, David (me), my brother Dana, and my sister Jeffri. As children, they were immersed in art from childhood and benefited greatly from this loving art and domestic environment.
Hatchett was always interested in the techniques of construction, often watching different tradesmen working, understanding how materials are put together to create the manmade environment that surrounded him. While teaching printmaking at Oklahoma City University from 1951 through ‘54, he began to build sculpture employing some of the materials and techniques that he saw workers using. He was beginning to draw the attention of architects and he became interested in their work-trade processes, moving from blue prints to construction. He accepted an invitation from Alexander Hogue...

Wilfred Stanley Pettitt was born in Great Yarmouth in 1904, the fourth child in a family of eight; he studied at the Great Yarmouth School of Art and Norwich School of Art.
When his father’s art shop in Great Yarmouth floundered during the First World War the family moved to a small holding in Reedham. This developed into the firm known as “Pettitts Ltd of Reedham” and was run by the family; more recently, having new owners, it is now called “Pettitts Animal Adventure Park”.
When Wilfred Pettitt married in 1929, he and his wife, Bessie, settled at 38 Earlham Green Lane, Norwich. The year before he had the first of several Royal Academy hangings (1928-1948). His work was also exhibited by the “Royal Society of British Arts” and the “Royal Cambrian Academy”. In the 1920’s he began experimenting in wood cuts and etchings but he was mainly an East Anglian landscape painter in oil, acknowledging Constable as an influence. "Vegetable Forms No. 9" "1st State" is a beautiful linear design woodcut of an artichoke. What is intellectually interesting is the fractal beauty of nature found in the artichoke. A fractal is a kind of pattern that we observe often in nature and in art. Whenever you observe a series of patterns repeating over and over again, at many different scales, and where any small part resembles the whole, that’s a fractal. The Artichoke is the perfect example in that the shape of the leaves repeat themselves and they are the same shape as the fruit itself. Colton Waugh was a third generation American Artist. He was mostly known for his Marine paintings, still-life paintings, and landscapes. He attended the Art Students League and learned his technique using the pallet knife, which is noted in most of his paintings. This painting is a very rich celebration of color and texture. It can be noted that the artist was fond of using the pallet knife, and in this painting, we can see great executions of this. The brilliant contrasts are highlighted to great depth, as we can almost feel that this painting has a sculptural effect. This piece is truly inviting with beautiful details, as the "Fog and Brook" of Central Park in New York City is portrayed whimsically and gracefully. The painting is signed lower left and titled on verso by the artist. It comes in a the original Mid-Century natural wood frame with silver face and with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed.

Coulton Waugh was born in 1896 in Cornwall, England. He was an American visual artist, son of maritime painter Frederick Judd Waugh, and his grandfather was the Philadelphia portrait painter Samuel Waugh. In 1907 his family moved to the United States, he grew up in Provincetown, Massachusetts and later made his home in Newburgh, New York. Over there Waugh was enrolled at New York's Art Students League where he studied with George Bridgman, Frank Dumond, and John Carlson. By 1916 Coulton was employed as a textile designer. In 1921 he moved to Provincetown, Massachusetts where he operated a model ship and hooked rug shop for 11 years.
As a part of an artistic family, Waugh was a painter, comic strip artist and author. As he lived in New York he is often known for the artistic work in marine scenes, still life compositions and cartoons. Also was one of the main artists who worked on the famous “Dickie Dare” comics, created by Milton Caniff. He was working on the strip for more than 20 years, from 1933 until 1957, and there is where Waugh met his future wife, Odin, after hiring her to work on the strip as an artist and letterer. In 1945, he created “Hank” which only ran a short time. From 1947 on, Waugh divided his time between painting, teaching art and writing a seminal history of cartooning called “The Comics” in 1947 as a reference on the history of comics, which became one of the first serious examinations of the medium, as well as instructional books on cartooning and palette-knife painting.
In Provincetown, he created other pictorial maps or decorative maps, including ones of Provincetown of 1924, Cape Cod of 1926 and Newburgh, New York in 1958. His map of California of 1948 was a collaboration with his wife Odin Burvik (Mabel Burwick).
His paintings were displayed at New York's Hudson Walker Gallery, and he also was known for his pictorial maps and hand-colored lithographs, like the one exhibited of a Cape Cod map...

Duayne Hatchett was a visual artist whose work included prints, paintings, sculpture, and found objects. He was born on May 12, 1925 in Shawnee, Oklahoma. He enlisted in the Air Force where he trained to become a fighter pilot. After leaving the militrary he studied design at the University of Oklahoma. His highly technical military training combined a mathematical intelligence with a love for physics and a daring embrace of new experience, all of which would soon be the tools for his evolution through art.
Two major influences interacted on his early development at OU. Emelio Omero, a colleague and close friend of Diego Rivera, introduced him to the revolutionary art ideas of Mexico City, while teaching him a wide range of printing techniques that would culminate in a Masters Degree in Painting in 1952. During this time he met Bruce Goff, a renowned Wright disciple, who was teaching architecture at OU and befriended Hatchett, introducing him to the most avant-garde architecture of that time.
He spent his summers while at OU designing for a small sign shop, which introduced him to new materials used for building neon, plastic, and metal signs. The use of new materials and a keen sense for design would soon become invaluable building blocks for future sculpture. During this time he met and married Mary Ellen Jeffries. They would spend their lives together and raise three children, David (me), my brother Dana, and my sister Jeffri. As children, they were immersed in art from childhood and benefited greatly from this loving art and domestic environment.
Hatchett was always interested in the techniques of construction, often watching different tradesmen working, understanding how materials are put together to create the manmade environment that surrounded him. While teaching printmaking at Oklahoma City University from 1951 through ‘54, he began to build sculpture employing some of the materials and techniques that he saw workers using.
