1925 Mariano Fortuny Couture Gold Metallic Stenciled Silk-Velvet Tabard Gown...
Mariano Fortuny...
...
In his profound, multifarious output, Mariano Fortuny often drew inspiration from antique textiles. He did not simply copy the old designs; he reinterpreted them to achieve an artistic ideal. His atelier was in Venice, which had been the center of the Renaissance textile trade with the Orient. The Venetian aesthetic tradition was thus a fertile source of ideas about the textile masterpieces of the past. This breathtaking silk-velvet Tabard gown is a perfect and rare example of Mariano Fortuny's genius. The garment is fashioned in the Frangonard 18th century French Toile pattern as shown in the book "Mario Fortuny: His Life and Work" by Guillermo de Osma. The hand stenciling is done with real gold-metallic pigments and beautiful beads are made of glass. This exact Fortuny gown is a part of the permanent collection at The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Fortuny created some of the most remarkable fabrics and dresses of the 20th century. Although known today primarily as a dress and fabric designer, he was also a painter, etcher, sculptor, photographer, lighting engineer, set designer, theater director, inventor and architect. He personified the Renaissance man who could do it all. As a young man, he stated, "Art is my life's aim." His work is a living testament to that ideal. This gown is in wonderful wearable and displayable condition. The silk-velvet has no rips, stains or holes. There is no label present (this was not uncommon in the earlier pieces) but we have had it verified to be a guaranteed Fortuny as shown. The pleated side panels were restored in the late 1930's with matching silk-rayon. The inner ivory china-silk lining has wear which is not seen when worn. This Haute-Couture garment is truly an iconic and rare find....

This piece was part of a large estate of Touret items, bought directly from the sons of the owners. The Atelier Marolles was commissioned to furnish the house, from a dinner table and sideboard to small items like this one. The items were made in the 1950s, under the direction of and designed by Jean Touret. The late Jean Touret began a career as a painter and then turned towards woodcarving. All his life he continued his aesthetic research by experimenting unconventional use of a variety of materials: Wood, paper, copper, zinc, bronze, plexiglass, ceramics and concrete. In 1939 Norman Bel Geddes was hired by General Motors to design the pavilion for the World Expo in New York known as "Futurama." The "future" was the year 1960 as imagined by Mr. Bel Geddes. "I have seen the future" was the phrase printed on pins given out to each visitor. If anyone was capable of seeing a clean and elegant "streamlined" future from 1939, it was certainly Norman Bel Geddes, one of the most important designers of the twentieth century. And his vision DID transform American culture and way-of-life through designs of appliances and architectural projects, while all the time he continued to present visionary ideas such as flying cars and floating airports. Norman Bel Geddes was a pioneering genius--of not just design, but of concept....

Brass, Copper, Lapis Lazuli...
Antonio Castillo began his storied career in silversmithing by working for William Spratling before founding "Los Castillo" with his brothers. (Their ranch, in fact, was right next to Spratling's outside Taxco.) The ex-patriot American writer Frances Toor well described the Los Castillo product as "fascinating varieties of metal designs, ranging from chaste simplicity to the nearly overwhelming." The simple Los Castillo designs can indeed underwhelm, while the more elaborate are sometimes close to gaudy. But when Los Castillo got it right, as they did with this marvelous 1950's piece, there is little better. This pitcher is beyond the utilitarian. It is art. And as Antonio Castillo once said, "A home without silver is like a night without stars." A simply exquisite pitcher of hammered brass with silver-plate and a bejeweled handle in the shape of a bird with tourmaline eyes and a crest of copper with clear Mayan influences. Obviously this piece is more than the utilitarian function it was built to carry out; it must be considered more "sculpture"--even "jewelry." An early Los Castillo work, when design and quality there was at its height--after 1939 but certainly before 1960; probably forged during the war, 1940-45, when silver was at a premium. ...

The walnut woods are probably the most recognizable and popular of all the exotic woods, having been used in furniture making for many centuries. Walnut veneer was highly priced and the cost would reflect the ‘fanciness’ of the veneer – the more decorative, then the more expensive and desirable. Figured Walnut and Burr Walnut (often referred to as burl walnut) were considered as the most attractive varieties of Walnut. Burr Walnut veneer was taken from the specific part of the tree where ‘growths’ sprouting smaller branches and/ or roots would occur. As these ‘growth’ areas were limited in both occurrence and size, larger veneers were hard to source and often on bigger furniture (tables, desks, bureaus, cabinets etc), these veneers would have to be carefully joined by matching up the pieces or blending them together. Art Deco or Deco, is an influential visual arts design style which first appeared in France during the 1920s, flourished internationally during the 1930s and 1940s. It is an eclectic style that combines traditional craft motifs with Machine Ageimagery and materials. The style is often characterized by rich colors, bold geometric shapes, and lavish ornamentation. Deco emerged from the Interwar period when rapid industrialization was transforming culture. One of its major attributes is an embrace of technology. This distinguishes deco from the organic motifs favored by its predecessor Art Nouveau. Historian Bevis Hillier defined Art Deco as "an assertively modern style...[that] ran to symmetry rather than asymmetry, and to the rectilinear rather than the curvilinear; it responded to the demands of the machine and of new material...[and] the requirements of mass production". During its heyday Art Deco represented luxury, glamour, exuberance, and faith in social and technological progress.  ...

In "Wall of Water" Robin Rhode has created one of his arresting narratives. The compelling photograph depicts a character, dressed in a white doctor’s coat, placing a stethoscope against the wall’s surface below a painted water droplet. This spontaneous act implies that the wall embodies life-like qualities, such as a heartbeat, and the character’s ears are filled with the sound of the water drop. In addition, as with many of Rhode’s photographs, the character is masked, and meant to remain unknown, universal, and timeless. Like much of Rhode’s photographic work, Wall of Water is heavily influenced by the early methods of motion photography and motion pictures, often seen in the work of Eadweard Muybridge. A sense of spontaneity and action is also a vital aspect of Rhode’s work, and this work embodies the rebellious nature of graffiti and street art with the body-based performance art of the 1970s. The Los Angeles Times has written of Rhode’s work, “It may be tempting to lump Rhode in with other artists who document physical performances, but his work is another species entirely. Each image is carefully staged for the camera—in some cases requiring that an entire wall be repainted for each shot. The resulting sequences suggest a combination of live action and animation, a space somewhere in between the reality we inhabit and the one we imagine.” Recent activities for Rhode include a solo show at Lehmann Maupin Gallery, New York, and concurrently a solo exhibition at the Drawing Center, New York. It was also just announced that he has been commissioned to create a performance piece in Times Square for the performance art biennale, Performa15....

This work is a still from Hand Catching Lead, Richard Serra's first feature film from 1968. The film shows a single shot of Serra's hand repeatedly opening and closing, trying to catch chunks of lead dropping from above. Serra is perhaps best known for his site-specific sculptures, has created works that span the mediums, including drawing and video, and that cross the continents from America to Asia. The single most important characteristic of his art is its pure physicality; the presence of his work, either because of materials or the site, is always insistent and, at times, unsettling. Frequently using industrial materials, Serra's sculptures evoke a sense of rawness while their towering heights and simple lines forcefully transgress into the viewer's space. In his series Tilted Arcs (1996-1999) monumental sheets of steel curve through public spaces, creating private enclaves even as these interventions shatter prior relationships with said spaces....

Oil on canvas Hand-signed "Pat Steir, 1988" verso Excellent Condition Though her early work was loosely allied with Conceptual Art and Minimalism, Pat Steir's poured “Waterfall” paintings initiated in 1988 gained her critical acclaim. Profoundly influenced by Chinese painting traditions and techniques—especially the marks of the eighth- and ninth-century Yi-pin “ink-splashing” (or "flung ink") painters—mentorships from John Cage and Agnes Martin, and the harmony between man and nature espoused by Taoist philosophy, Steir considers elemental forces active participants in her work, intentionally removing herself from the action and allowing gravity, time, and the environment to determine the work’s result. However, despite this painting's obvious debt to physicality of paint and the effect of gravity upon it, "Waterfall" retains a sense of delicacy, creating a tension between the tempestuous and tranquil aspects of the natural world....

Françoise Gilot...
...
Lithograph...
Rare vintage limited edition Stone Lithograph printed at Mourlot in Paris. this is from a signed and numbered portfolio but the individual sheets are not hand signed and numbered. Francois Gilot, (1921-) studied English Literature at Cambridge University, and then, encouraged by her father, studied international law, though she secretly also took art lessons at the same time. In 1943, during her first exhibition in Paris, Gilot (then 21) met Pablo Picasso (who was 61) for the first time. In 1946, Gilot started a 10-year relationship with the notorious womanizer and had two of his children,Claude and Paloma. As a result of her relationship with Picasso, Gilot "became both a witness and a participant in one of the last great periods of the modern art movement in Europe. Their circle included poets, philosophers, writers, and many of the legends of the art world, such as Braque, Chagall, Cocteau and Matisse. In 1953, Gilot left Picasso and the home they shared in Vallauris and moved back to Paris. "Lithographs are printed from stones and each stone is an echo of my artistic voice," said Gilot. "Many artists use their art as a personal catharsis. I have never done that. I am more intellectual. Each artistic process -- oils, lithographs, monotypes -- allows me a different freedom and suits a different mood." While Gilot did her first lithograph in 1950 at the Mourlot Atelier, the same studio used by Picasso, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Jean Miro and Jean Dubuffet, it was in the 1970s that she really began to experiment with the process. "In the beginning I turned to lithography because I wanted to show off my technical skills. Now I am more interested in color," said Gilot. "I also thought that lithographs would make my works more accessible to young collectors." While her oils are priced up to $100,000, her lithographs begin at $2,000 and her monotypes range from $1,000 to $2,500.
