Copper, Crystal...
A stunning piece of art, star is a set of three vessels in copper and Swarovski Elements black crystals designed by British architect David Adjaye. One of the world’s leading architects of his generation, Adjaye was chosen to design the Smithsonian National Museum of African-American history and culture that will open in Washington in 2015. Star is entirely handmade in copper by Turkish artisans, the interior being completely covered with Swarovski Elements black crystals. True micro-architectures, these three vessels offer various plays on light and geometry representative of Adaye’s vision and sensibility. David Adjaye graduated with a M.A Arch. from the Royal College of Art in 1993 where he won the RIBA bronze medal. In 2007 he received an honorary doctorate of the arts from the University of East London. He currently is the Kenzo Tange professor in architecture at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. Adjaye is a foreign honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Star is produced in a limited edition of 25 by Gaia & Gino. Each piece may be sold individually. The ‘Element Table Steel’ is a minimalistic coffee table by rising star of British design Faye Toogood, long standing editor at World of Interiors, and renowned for her set productions for Commodes Garçons, Tom Dixon and Alexander McQueen. This elegant table is produced in an edition of 8+2AP. An admirer of Minimalist sculpture and British Modernists, in addition to Italian designers from the 1950s to the 1970s, Faye Toogood considers the relationships between simple forms to create objects. Since her first collection of furniture and product design in 2011, produced by British artisans, she has been successful in imposing a clearly defined visual language conveyed by sleek primary shapes and the authenticity of materials. “All my pieces start with clean, geometric shapes. They’re like building blocks. I’m not interested in creating new, futuristic silhouettes”, says Faye. The simple cube, sphere and cylinder shapes fundamental elements in her vocabulary are here elegantly combined to form a sophisticated yet simple coffee table. Sophistication, elegant simplicity, and a sense of timelessness are central, conveyed by clean primary shapes, the authenticity of the materials and the weight of the piece matching its large dimensions. In very good condition, with minor wear consistent with age and use, preserving a beautiful patina. Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) she was born in Paris in 1903 and attended the École de l'Union centrale des Arts décoratifs from 1920-1925. Charlotte Perriand designed furniture made of anodized aluminium and chromium-plated steel, showing it at the 1927 "Salon d'Automne" in Paris. After meeting Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand worked with him and Pierre Jeanneret until 1937. The revolutionary tubular steel furnishings and system furniture designed by the three were presented as "Équipement de l'habitation" (home equipment) at the 1929 "Salon d'Automne," where they were widely acclaimed. In 1930 the Union Des Artistes Modernes (UAM) was founded in Paris, a group that viewed itself as a countermovement challenging such establishment organizations as the "Salon d'Automne" and also advocated Art Déco and Modernism. From 1931 Charlotte Perriand showed her own work solo there. In 1937 Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeanneret collaborated on designing a mountain chalet of sheet aluminium, which they showed at the "Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne" and later they came up with plans for prefab houses made of aluminium. In 1940 Charlotte Perriand became a design consultant to the Japanese Board of Trade. She lived in Japan until 1946 and from then on Charlotte Perriand's designs reveal overtones of the Japanese feeling for form, as shown by the 1953 chair "Synthèse des Arts."...

Oak...
Jean Prouvé's "Tout Bois" chair was an all-wood version of his famous steel "Standard Chair." Because the exigencies of world war made supplies of steel unobtainable in 1942, Prouvé redesigned the chair to use as little metal as possible (the eight screws which fasten the seat and back are the only parts not made of wood). The switch from steel to wood gave Prouvé an opportunity to experiment with traditional furniture making methods that were paradoxically new to him, the Machine Age Pioneer. Lovely through-tenons conspicuously join the horizontal members (that support the seat) to the rear legs, and also the front cross-bar to the front legs. Though consistent with the modernist ethic of structural honesty, such labor intensive joinery links Prouvé to the craftsmen of an older era that of his father Victor Prouvé. While made entirely of oak, this war-time iteration of the "Standard Chair" retains Jean Prouvé's signature rear legs that emphatically express the structural loads of the chair. Thus the distinctive profile, no less confidently architectural than the "pilotis" of a Le Corbusier building. Which may explain Le Corbusier's original choice of these chairs for use in his famous postwar Unité d'Habitation, in Marseilles. All of the early photographs of the interiors of this most influential of Le Corbusier buildings show Prouvé's "Tout Bois" chairs used exclusively in both the dining areas and the bedrooms. Neon Floor Lamp by Pierre Paulin designed for Verre Lumiere in 1971, in blush-colored metal lacquer. ABOUT THE DESIGNER: Pierre Paulin (1927-2009) was one of the most important designers of the 20th century. He is perhaps best known for his innovative designs for Artifort of the 1960s– the famed Mushroom Chair (1959), the Ribbon Chair (1966) and the Tongue chair (1968)– but Paulin was also highly influential and involved in French design through the 1970s as well. Most notably, Paulin was invited by the Mobilier National in 1970 to decorate the private apartments of George Pompidou in the Palais de l'Elysee, and to furnish the office of Francois Mitterand in 1983. Paulin's work was clearly influenced by his German roots as well as the work of early modernists, but he was even more impacted by the work of George Nelson and Charles Eames and the significance of the social component of modern design. Today, Paulin's designs are found in the collections of major museums across the world such as MoMA in New York, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and London's Victoria and Albert Museum. In February 2008, the Galerie des Gobelins in Paris exhibited Paulin's works from the permanent collection of Mobilier National as well as a selection of other signature pieces produced throughout his career. ...
