The famous graffiti artist SEEN is Richard “Richie” Mirando. Hailing from the Bronx, New York, he and his United Artists (UA) crew were some of the first to popularize painting on trains. Known as the “Godfather of Graffiti,” SEEN began spray-painting trains on the New York subway at the age of 11 in 1972. For the next 16 years, SEEN pieces were running across the city and were especially prominent on the 2, 5 and 6 lines. He was responsible for dozens of whole-car top-to-bottoms, many of which have become iconic images of the time. About the Artist: Seen (American, born 1961) is a street artist best known for his graffiti works which covered MTA train cars along the New York subway system during the 1970s. Characterized by bright block letters and cartoonish depictions of human figures, the artist’s paintings and tattoos are influenced by comic books and television shows. “Graffiti lost its edge in the mid-1980s, and that’s why I needed to find other mediums like tattooing and clothing to put my name to,” he explained. Born Richard Mirando in 1961 in the Bronx, NY, he first began spray painting in 1973, alongside his graffiti crew United Artists. By the early 1980s, Seen had transitioned to work on canvas and began participating in shows alongside Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
