About the Item
One in a series of six drawings by Amanda Andersen created during an artist residency at the Vermont Studio Center in 2012. During this residency the artist explored ideas of flight while researching the invention and design of the hot air balloon.
These drawings were the beginning of a larger group of work reflecting on the duality of the balloon as a symbol for romantic flight as well as a powerful tool of displacement.
Here the artist was especially interested in the parts that make up a balloon canopy, the pieces of the pattern are called gores, similar in shape to a natural tree leaf. Specifically a gore is one panel–a segment of a hot air balloon envelope–six of these are sewn together to create a full balloon canopy, therefore six drawings are represented in this series. Without the conceptual background of the piece, it takes on the appearance of a simple organic shape.
Minimal repeating pencil lines on neutral colored grey paper fill the gore pattern.
The artwork is initialed on the back. Also seen on the backside: acid free tape on the corners of the paper as well as a draft drawing and pencil swatches.
Please note if you are interested in collecting more than one of these drawings that the paper was cut by hand and not every piece is the exact same size, they vary slightly (1 cm at most) and can easily be trimmed to match and frame.
