About the Item

This colored painted drawing imagines space in the multiverse: looping arcs of space contrasted to the 3-D space familiar to us represented by a checkerboard with a vanishing point, and a line-up of waxing and waning planets. The image measures 9" H x 12" W; the paper measures 11" H x 15" W. I am both fascinated and confounded by Albert Einstein’s claim that time — as we perceive it — is an illusion. Astrophysicists say that space and time are tied together in a so-called continuum, but the continuum is local, not universal; we exist in a 3D world, but there are mysteries in the multiverse like black holes, and seven to ten dimensions, that we can only theorize about. These drawings are playful, and imaginative visual speculations on the mysteries of the multiverse. It is said that we exist in a mathematical construct. Using a visual vocabulary that contains geometry, movement, space, color, rhythm, patterning, and dance seems like a reasonable strategy for approximating — or more modestly — attempting to conceive the inconceivable. These drawings are neither purely abstract, nor strictly representational, but hover somewhere between the two. They share an interest in spatial illusion, intricacy, geometry, cross-hatching and implied movement. They are playfully quirky, at times mildly psychedelic. Each represents a unified world with its own internal logic that abides by a few natural laws we recognize, like the existence of light, perspective, gravity, 2-D and 3-D space.
