About the Item
"Rock in a Hard Place" is a conceptual work on paper featuring black, white and grey hues.
Andrew Herzog is inspired by the work of Andy Goldsworthy, Olafur Eliason, and Francis Alÿs.
These works are made using pigment ground from rocks and water. Much like water over time carves and shapes the stones that we live on and among, water places the key role in displacing and aiding the pigment settle into a suitable form. As with a lot of work in my practice, I'm very interested in making something from as little as possible and utilizing the ubiquitous. Ideally, the presentation slows viewers down by making the processes that create the works transparent and comprehensible.
As we exist fully in the Anthropocene, an epoch where every experience we have is affected by humans' presence on earth, there has and continues to be an ever-increasing need for artists to recognize the ecological importance in our processes and materials. The ingredients for this specific work are so simple I hope it plants a question in the viewer's mind as to where does anything come from? If a stone can be made to depict a stone with two ingredients (stone and water) where do all of the other ingredients that we indiscriminately rely on every day come from and at what cost to the earth?
Born in Philadelphia, Andrew Herzog is a multi-disciplinary artist and designer currently working in New York City. Herzog creates a variety of works that explore the relationship between the viewer and the artist with themes of accessibility and prioritized sight, often taking the form of photographs, books, films, site-specific sculptures and interactive performances, objects and drawings. Herzog defines “prioritized sight” as how we choose, consciously or unconsciously, the things we see; what we engage or empathize with; and what we understand or misinterpret, with varying degrees of implication.
Herzog received an MA in Graphic Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design. He was the co-founder and partner at the design and technology studio HAWRAF, and led projects at the Google Creative Lab focusing on AI, creative tools and accessibility. Also, Herzog is adjunct professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Herzog has lectured and exhibited works at the A4 Art Museum, Chengdu, Sichuan, China; The Franklin Institute, Philadelphia, PA; Q21 MuseumsQuartier Wien, Vienna, Austria; and The National Museum of Art of Romania; among others.
