Minimalist work by Annemarie Graupner, in a charming hand-carved wood frame. Perfect for an intimate nook.
About this artist: Swiss artist Annemarie Graupner, granddaughter of the Swiss watercolorist Christian Baumgartner, began her arts training at the Ecole des Beau-Arts in Geneva. Later she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich with Hermann Kaspar and Julius Hess.
In the early 1950s her focus was on paintings for porcelain. She then transitioned to designing textiles and large tapestries. Her work also included collages and assemblages. Graupner was a member of the Association of German and Austrian Artists, as well as the New Munich Artists' Association. Galerie Handwerk showed her artwork, as did the Haus der Kunst – both in Munich. Graupner also showed in many group and solo exhibitions in Germany.
While at the Academy of Fine Arts she met, and later married (1953), the artist Ernst Graupner. The couple had a son, Stefan Graupner in 1954. Annemarie Graupner passed away in 2004.

This series was inspired by a 1950’s era instruction manual found while clearing out my father’s basement workshop. The How To Light A Model manual employed voluptuous female models to teach lighting techniques to amateur photographers such as my father. Diagrams plot the prescribed direction of the lights. The nude women hold the pose, their lips bright red and their feet dirty from the studio floor. As naked props for the authoritarian photographer, their vulnerability seems palpable.
This work visualizes the human condition as a balance between feral and fabricated worlds. Vivid, oversized creatures embody instinctual energy. Wax seals, gold spheres and text-like marks signify rational structures. One speaks in a whisper, the other in a hiss.
