Blade Graffiti drawings: set of 2 works (Blade king of graffiti)

c.1989

About the Item

BLADE graffiti drawings: set of 2 works: A set of 2 rare drawings from Blade - King of Graffiti circa late 1980’s or early 1990’s. Here the artist playfully fakes his own death, ‘RIP Blade’ and cites the words “tired” and “fatiqe” to criticize the US dollar in the blue & white drawing. Timeless, highly collectible artworks from the "king of Graffiti" - a true legend who is said to have painted over 5,000 graffiti cars & is widely admired by the who's who of the international graffiti world. Ink on paper: set of 2 individual works measuring: 6.25 x 6.4 & 6.25 x 2.75 inches (for the example on white paper), respectively. Each unique with the artist referencing himself on both works. Minor signs of handling and aging; each in good overall vintage condition. Provenance: originally sourced from Ronald Glazer a lifelong friend of the artist. About BLADE: Steven Ogburn, better known as BLADE, grew up in the Bronx. By 1980, he would become one of the most influential figures in graffiti. Blade began writing his name on the inside of buses and on the exterior of post office trucks in 1971 with small markers. In 1972, he hit his first train at the Baychester lay-up. His style began with stick letters like the rest of his peers until 1974 when he began painting in his signature "bubble letters." BLADE hit his last train with fellow graffiti artist SEEN in 1984. He was introduced to the art world by famed photographs Henry Chalfant and Martha Cooper, and had his first solo show at the Stellweg Seguy Gallery in New York in 1984. BLADE’s work has been shown in many individual and group shows in notable venues including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Musée National des Monuments Français, the Stedelijk Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Brooklyn Museum. His work is in the collections of Willem Speerstra, Yaki Kornblitt and Vincent Vlasblom, and fellow artist KAWS. {source: Eazel} Related Categories Graffiti. Street Art. Pop Art. Futura 2000.
