About the Item

Baldur Helgason drawing 2018: Baldur Helgason Jorgen the Dog Day: A robust, lively Helgason hand-drawing defined by the artist’s signature style. Medium: wax crayon on paper. Unique. Executed in 2018. 11.75 x 9 inches (28.7 x 22.9 cm). Dimensions including frame: 18.75 x 21.75 inches. Framed in glass; appears in excellent overall condition (not examined out of frame). Hand-signed 'Baldur' (lower right). Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist 2018; Christie’s New York 2023. Baldur Helgason combines elements of caricature with oil painting and portraiture techniques inspired by portrait masters like John Singer Sargent. Most of Helgason’s works feature a mischievous cartoon man that serves as the artist’s avatar. Drawn in the style of classic animations like Felix the Cat and Betty Boop, the perpetually smiling everyman is both childlike and unsettlingly adult in his activities, as in the piece Etc. Etc. Etc. (Action Painting) (2020), where he is shown holding a lit cigarette in his comically oversized hand. Helgason’s works have been exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Amsterdam, and Reykjavik, and he had a market breakout in 2021 when his painting Portrait of a Man in a Trench Coat (2017) more than quadrupled its high estimate at auction. _ Please note this work was acquired already framed. The frame is offered as is & we place no guarantees related to (3rd party) framing. Related Categories: Dogs. Dog drawings. Comic cartoon. Icelandic artists. Kaws. Takashi Murakami. • Salvador Dalí Whoever Takes Carmen (Salvador Dalí prints Salvador Dalí Carmen)
    By Salvador Dalí
    Located in NEW YORK, NY
Salvador Dalí Whoever Takes Carmen Away Must Pay with His Life 1970 (from Carmen): Lithograph in colors on Arches paper. 25.5 x 19.8 inches (64.8 x 50.5 cm). Good overall vintage condition: minor surface marks; minor signs of handling. Signed and editioned in pencil along lower. Ed. LIII/CXXV (part of a full tirage of 276, variously editioned, aside from proofs). Published by Shorewood Publishers, NY. Literature/References: The Official Catalog of The Graphic Works of Salvador Dali by Albert Field, entry: 70-1, Q. Salvador Dalí was a renowned Surrealist artist known for his enigmatic paintings of dreamscapes and religious themes. The Persistence of Memory (1931), arguably his best known work, visually manifests the strangeness of time, showing clocks melting in an idyllic landscape. “One day it will have to be officially admitted that what we have christened reality is an even greater illusion than the world of dreams,” he once reflected. Born Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech on May 11, 1904 in Figueres, Spain, he displayed a great aptitude for the visual arts as a teenager. Three years after his first exhibition at the age of 14, he enrolled at the Academia de San Fernando in Madrid. At school, he emulated many contemporary styles but also the works of Johannes Vermeer and Diego Velázquez. During his visits to Paris in the late 1920s, he was introduced to the Surrealist movement by René Magritte and Joan Miró. Though the concept of Surrealism was new to him, Dalí was already well versed in the psychoanalytic theories of Sigmund Freud. Dabbling in various projects throughout his long career, in 1942 he published the book The Secret Life of Salvador Dalí. A mixture of self-aggrandizing confessions and sadistic fantasies about his childhood, the book further outlined the artist’s outlandish persona. However, his pronounced sense of ego was not always unfounded, as evinced in his works inclusion in Alfred Hitchcock’s famous dream sequence from the film Spellbound (1945). Dalí died on January 23, 1989 in his hometown of Figueres, Spain. Today, his works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Modern in London, the Reina Sofia National Museum in Madrid, and the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, among others.
