About the Item

accumulated smoke (carbon pigment) on paper 10 x 10 inches; image size / 21.25 x 17.25 x 1.25 inches; framed Bryan David Griffith's work explores the idea that dualities—light and darkness, life and death, object and emptiness, forest and fire—aren’t opposed forces, but rather part of the same continuous cycle; one can’t exist without the other. He juxtaposes soft organic lines with geometric forms that convey our desire to compartmentalize and control capricious natural processes like wildfire, often with unintended consequences. Griffith’s work spans photography, painting, sculpture, and installation, often using simple materials and equipment in unexpected ways. His work is held in public collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; University of Michigan Museum of Art; Center for Creative Photography; and Fort Wayne Museum of Art. He has exhibited extensively throughout the US, with recent and upcoming solo shows at the Griffin Museum of Photography, Coconino Center for the Arts, and Mesa Contemporary Art Museum.

One in a series of six drawings by Amanda Andersen created during an artist residency at the Vermont Studio Center in 2012. During this residency the artist explored ideas of flight while researching the invention and design of the hot air balloon. These drawings were the beginning of a larger group of work reflecting on the duality of the balloon as a symbol for romantic flight as well as a powerful tool of displacement. Here the artist was especially interested in the parts that make up a balloon canopy, the pieces of the pattern are called gores, similar in shape to a natural tree leaf. Specifically a gore is one panel–a segment of a hot air balloon envelope–six of these are sewn together to create a full balloon canopy, therefore six drawings are represented in this series. Without the conceptual background of the piece, it takes on the appearance of a simple organic shape. Minimal repeating pencil lines on neutral colored grey paper fill the gore...
