About the Item

This piece is an abstract botanical work on paper featuring hues of red, blue and tan. It is framed in a simple white box frame behind UV Plexiglas. The unframed work measures 60 by 44 inches. Caroline Bullock is inspired by the work of Agnes Martin, Anish Kapoor, Katharina Grosse, Andy Goldsworthy and Lucy Dodd. Caroline Bullock is an Atlanta-based Artist working in cyanotype and mixed media exploring philosophical and scientific questions about the nature of reality and impermanence. The natural world, specifically the plant world, is a constant source of Caroline’s inspiration. It teaches about balance, seasonality, courage, endurance, and the interdependence of all things. Inspired by the 13th century poet Rumi, her latest body of work, This Place is a Dream, reflects on the transient and illusory nature of the physical world. Drawing from her curiosities about Gestalt theory, quantum physics, and Buddhist philosophy, she has created imagined landscapes using photography, paint and paper. A key element of the work is the cyanotype photographic process, which captures multiple layers of meaning—place, time, atmosphere, object and shadow—within a single image. She gathers plants from her garden at the end of each season to create the cyanotype compositions, and puzzles together these fragmented impressions into a cohesive whole. The final pieces emerge as landscapes of intricate plant patterns, exploring the interplay of positive and negative space, presence and absence, form and formlessness. Caroline sees these works as a visual record of her human attempt to understand the universe. Caroline received a BFA from Georgia State University, with additional education at Art Center College of Design and Virginia Commonwealth University. Her work is included in the collection of the High Museum of Art and The Coca-Cola Company as well as numerous private and public collections worldwide. She has exhibited in Atlanta and New York, and has been reviewed in Art Papers, Luxe and House & Garden magazines.
