About the Item

The Spangle Maker 19, Drawing by Christopher Russell, 2024 "Landscape is a place of endless metaphor. Parasitic, ghostly orchids growing from the roots of giant pines in the Columbia Gorge have an instant narrative quality; a real world succubus in vampiric pallor. Long, rolling descriptions of the night give passion and place; cataloging is a colonialist approximation of godliness, and it is within this collection of details Maldoror finds a sense of the eternal. The chance crossing of branches; a makeshift cathedral. The enclosure of a copse; home. Water: placid, treacherous, babbling, its fluidity allows it to transform to our narrative whims, and because of its reflective powers, we share with it an intimacy; it knows us as well as any photograph—only better. Water can offer a gentle reflection, giving our visage the Old Hollywood treatment. Yet it might merge foreground and background, combining the image of things behind the viewer with the actual thing behind it. Given to the whims of a gentle breeze, water offers a glimpse of our own instability; fleeting notions of self, or pointing to the possibility of our own instability rendering ourselves grotesque and beautiful." Additional information: Medium: Pigment print folded and scratched with a razor Condition: Excellent Frame: Not included Dimensions: 54 × 36 in 137.2 × 91.4 cm About artist: Based in the Pacific Northwest, Christopher Russell draws inspiration from the majestic landscapes captured by pioneer photographer Carleton Watkins nearly 150 years ago. However, Russell's photographs offer a contemporary twist by purposefully limiting the lens functionality to create hazy, abstract images. He then adds his own touch by manipulating the prints, scratching into the emulsion, and sometimes even painting over the scratches. The result is a multi-dimensional work that blurs the lines between photography, drawing, painting, and bas-relief. Russell's work challenges the traditional notion of photography as a tool for capturing evidence, instead provoking reflection on our understanding of nature and the landscape. He incorporates historical plant and floral patterns from the Arts and Crafts era, symbolizing the infinite within nature. While breaking conceptual and art historical boundaries, Russell's work still maintains a sense of romanticism, inviting viewers to experience the wonder that inspires him. Writer and artist Christopher Russell produces haunting mixed-media works and installations that conjure memories and suppressed narratives, pointing to the many layers that constitute the human psyche. Typically beginning by capturing photographs of ruined and abandoned spaces, or wild landscapes, Russell then manipulates them digitally before scratching patterns and images into their surfaces with a razor, or applying spray paint. “I photograph the physical margins of the social pact,” he has said, “the edges of town, spaces that have been … abandoned.” Russell’s images have incorporated fractured glass, materials such as fabric, glitter, and dirt, and renderings of ghostly shipwrecks. Other works include a series of black-and-white photographs that depict gay men cruising San Francisco’s Buena Vista Park.
