About the Item
Dorothea Tanning (American, 1910–2012)
Initially associated with the Surrealist movement, Dorothea Tanning developed a personal visual language that blurred the boundaries between reality and the subconscious. Her work is defined by dreamlike imagery, psychological depth, and ever-evolving approach to surrealism and abstraction. Her early paintings feature enigmatic figures and haunted domestic spaces, while her later work features looser, more gestural abstraction, evoking states of transformation and flux. Tanning was also a prolific sculptor, writer, and poet, expanding her artistic vision across multiple disciplines. She spent much of her life in France before returning to the U.S., where she continued working into her centennial years. Though often contextualized within Surrealism, Tanning’s singular vision transcends categorization, offering a body of work that remains both haunting and deeply resonant.

Dorothea Tanning
Dorothea Tanning (1910–2012) was an American surrealist painter, sculptor, writer, and poet. Born in Galesburg, Illinois, she moved to New York in the 1930s, where she was introduced to surrealism. Her early works, such as Birthday (1942), depict dreamlike, mysterious interiors with unsettling imagery. She later married fellow surrealist Max Ernst, and they lived in France for several decades. Over time, her art evolved into more abstract and expressive forms. In addition to her visual art, Tanning wrote novels and poetry, remaining active in creative fields until her death at 101.
