About the Item

Winter Palace is a stunning abstract acrylic and watercolor painting on paper by 20th Century Denver artist Edward Marecak (1919-1993). Created circa the 1960s, the artwork features soft pastel tones of pink, blue, and green, capturing a serene, ethereal atmosphere. The piece is presented in a new, custom frame with archival materials, with outer dimensions measuring 19 ¾ x 23 x 1 inches, and an image size of 11 ⅝ x 14 ⅝ inches. Provenance: Estate of the artist, Edward Marecak. About the Artist: Edward Marecak, born to Slovakian immigrant parents, grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, where his early exposure to folk tales and customs heavily influenced his later work. His journey as an artist began at a young age, painting scenery for puppet shows and creating watercolor paintings inspired by Cézanne. After receiving a scholarship to study at the Cleveland Institute of Art, Marecak’s passion for painting flourished, leading to his continued studies at prestigious institutions like the Cranbrook Academy of Art and Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. Marecak's career spanned several decades, with significant influence from surrealism, classical mythology, and Eastern European folklore. His works feature intricate designs and bold color use, often drawing inspiration from Slovakian traditions and depicting mythical figures in modern settings. Throughout his career, he sought to capture the essence of these influences through mediums like oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, and casein. Marecak’s art is known for its dramatic use of color and complex patterns, with his later work incorporating both abstract and figurative elements. His compositions often evoke a dreamlike quality, blending surreal imagery with symbolism rooted in his heritage. Alongside his painting career, Marecak produced textiles, ceramics, and collaborated on designs for various household items. Although he preferred to work outside the mainstream art world, Marecak's work has been exhibited at prestigious galleries, including the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and the Denver Art Museum, and is held in museum collections like the Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art and the Denver Art Museum. Marecak’s influence as an artist remains significant, and his work continues to captivate art lovers with its rich color, intricate detail, and deep cultural storytelling.
