A member of the faculty of the Washington University Art School from 1929 to 1970, Frederick Conway was a painter, educator, and lecturer. When Max Beckmann was in residence at Washington University, Conway and he became close associates. Conway was one of the first to realize the importance and seriousness of Beckmann's teaching, and Beckmann painted Conway's portrait in 1949.
He was born in Saint Louis, Missouri and studied at the Saint Louis School of Fine Arts and in Paris at the Academie Julian, the Academy Moderne, and the Academy grande Chaumiere.
He has done murals for the WPA (Works Progress Administration) and exhibited widely including at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Kansas City Art Institute, and the Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC.

Some of Conway's most significant works are his murals. He painted several
large murals, including Peabody Coal Company HQ (St. Louis); Brown Shoe Company HQ (St. Louis); Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN); First National Bank of Tulsa, OK; and the Federal Building in Kansas City, MO - (he beat out Thomas Hart Benton for this commission); and the U.S. Post Office in Purcell, OK (his earliest mural, a WPA project).
He also illustrated a book, "How to Keep Your Temper on the Golf Course," written by former PGA pro golfer Tommy Bolt. Conway, an avid golfer,
painted and sculpted many golfing scenes in the last ten or so years of his
life.

Théo Tobiasse came from a Lithuanian-Jewish immigrant family who moved to Paris in 1931 for economic reasons. Here Tobiasse completed an apprenticeship at the École des Arts Décoratifs, which was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. The family lived hidden in the French metropolis for over two years without ever leaving the small apartment or even lighting it up. The time was spent reading, drawing and playing chess, and Tobiasse built up a huge pool of drawings from which he could later draw.
After the end of the war, he worked as a graphic designer for the Hermès company...
