About the Item

Artist Commentary: The colors in this work reflects a satellite image of the Mezen River in northwest Russia, where the fresh water of the river meets the saltwater of the Arctic Sea. The current of the river so strong that the sediment carried by the river pours out into the sea - not forming the typical land delta around it. Keywords: abstract, waves, black and white Artist Biography: Kerry Hirth was born in the Midwest and currently lives and works near Columbia, Missouri. Her work translates music to visual art. She uses her synesthetic experience of musical harmony as color to create drawings of music in vibrant linear patterns. Her work uses both color and text to capture the complexity and richness of music and explore the source of music in life experiences. She often collaborates with musicians, with some noteworthy past projects including: Live demonstration with an orchestra A curated program on the relationship between improvisational jazz and the visual arts Creating artwork for the first Mugellini Festival in Macerata, Italy Collaborating on the composition of new music Creating backgrounds for live performance Her approach to music and visual art has been shaped by her unique background. She received an MA in Philosophy with a minor in music performance. She has done archaeological illustrations of Mayan artifacts on site in Belize for the University of Texas-Austin and performed at the Aspen Music Festival for two seasons. Her projects include working with a women's cooperative in Morocco to create a tapestry from a music-based pattern and installing a large-scale painting of music at the University of Missouri's Life Sciences Center. Her work has been presented in gallery exhibitions nationally and internationally, as well as closer to home, where she is represented by Hilliard Gallery in Kansas City. Kerry does private, public, and corporate commissioned artworks.
