Larry Zox (1937-2006) was a central figure in the evolution of abstraction in American art of the 20th century. He played an essential role in the Color Field discourse of the 1960s and 1970s.
Raised in Des Moines, Iowa, Zox studied at the University of Oklahoma and went on to work under the tutelage of modernist Georg Grosz at the Des Moines Art Centre. Zox moved to New York City and established his reputation by the mid 1960's. His studio was located on 20th Street and he was surrounded and inspired by a melting pot of jazz artists, bikers, and boxers.
By the mid 1960s, Zox arrived at his characteristic style, utilizing hard-edge shapes in bold colors to create geometric patterns, which were often created on raw canvas.
“Edmonton” is a quintessential example of his mastery of geometry and color. With a mathematical precision and a subtle approach, Zox flattened colorful triangular shapes onto graph paper.
Zox's hard-edge geometric creations from the late 1960s and early 70s are arguably the most important from his oeuvre. Fittingly he was the subject of a retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1973. Today, his works are held in the collections of numerous museums including the Whitney, The MoMA, the Tate and the Metropolitan Museum.
"Rotation" is a quintessential example of his mastery of geometry and color. A rich purple dominates this abstract drawing surrounded by trapezoids. To the 21st century viewer, this palette evokes an early 90s sensibility, however this work was created nearly 30 years prior, when such a presentation of color was radical rather than trendy.

Larry Zox
Larry Zox was one of the principal representatives of the generation of young painters following the era of the Abstract Expressionists. He is best known for his exuberant geometric abstractions. Many classified him as an Abstract artist, but he considered himself to be a Colorist, which made a strong contribution to the Color Field movement of the 1960s. Zox utilized geometric forms in a mechanistic format and fewer contrasting colors in a design that is based upon improvisation. His works conform to the modern idea that art must be done with fluidity, acceleration and rapidity of execution.

Dorothy Dehner (1901–1994) was an influential American multidisciplinary artist who worked with drawing, painting, printmaking, and most notably sculpture.
Dehner's legacy has been overshadowed for many years by her ex-husband, the acclaimed sculptor David Smith. Stifled by their tumultuous relationship, Dehner only fully committed to her practice after divorcing him in 1951. This break was highly fruitful for her artistic output and reputation in the following years.
After the divorce, Dehner refined her artistic voice and expanded her practice to include printmaking and sculpture. Her new-found independence and renewed ambition led to a pivotal relationship with the esteemed printmaking studio Atelier 17. Working there she formed a close and enduring friendship with Louise Nevelson.
Today Dehner has been re-embraced and repositioned in the American art canon. Her work is best understood and appreciated in the context of not only David Smith but other artists dedicated to sculpture including Lee Bontecou, Louise Bourgeois, and of course Louise Nevelson.
This energetic and hypnotic work on paper is somewhat of a departure from Denher's structured and intricate approach. Bold, frenetic strokes of ink loop chaotically across the surface, revelling in a sense of fluid dynamism that is in contrast with the artist's architectural arrangements.
While it is notably looser and bolder then some of the drawings we expect from this era, we find the artist creating forms that are a harbinger of the muscular sculpture she would create in the following decade.
