Mary Judge
River And Steel Series Six, Geometric Drawing in Dark Blue, Yellow and Red

2011

About the Item

This geometric drawing has a beautiful, soft mottled texture created with Judge's unique powered pigment technique. The ordered symmetry of the diagonal lines in deeply pigmented dark navy blue, bright neon yellow, and a hint of dark red in the center is powerful and elegant. Signed, dated and titled on verso. The powdered pigment drawings on paper were made by laying perforated stencils on rag paper and pouncing the stencils with a sack of powdered pigment. Pigment passes through the perforations, leaving patterns, creating the composition. The technique the artist developed is based on the Italian process spolvero (meaning “dust”) that was used by Renaissance artists to transfer drawings to the wall for fresco painting. Each stencil is made by tracing a single symmetrical form numerous times. By working in series, Mary Judge is able to develop a form and continue mining its rich variations. Mary Judge is an artist in love with Italian art and traditional Italian art making techniques. Through her extensive knowledge of both Judge taps these traditions to craft and make contemporary her own personal artistic language. Utilizing the sensuality of her materials and embracing the chance events inherent in her process-driven work she continues to evolve and innovate her work in paint or dry pigment media. Mary Judge’s work has been exhibited widely in the Unites States, Italy, Switzerland, and Israel and is in numerous public and private collections including The National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, The British Museum, London, England, The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England, Permanent Collection of the US Embassy, Kazakhstan, NYU Langone Health, New York, NY, The Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia, PA, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, PA. She earned a BFA from Moore College of Art, Philadelphia, PA, and an MFA from Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia, PA, and Rome, Italy. The artist lives and works in the metropolitan New York area. Archival notes: The drawings are made with archival powdered pigment on Somerset 100% cotton rag printing paper and fixed with matte fixative.
