Near and Far Acuity, Mid Century Modern Op Art painting from historic exhibition
Located in New York, NY
Richard Anuszkiewicz Near and Far Acuity, 1957 Gouache and watercolor painting Hand signed and dated 1957 by Richard Anuszkiewicz on the right front Frame included Anuszkiewicz' artworks from the late 1950s are rarely found on the market. This historic painting is one of the works that helped launch the artist's career. It was done in 1957 - the year the artist arrived in New York. Near and Far Acuity has been removed from its original frame, and re-framed in an elegant wood frame with conservation materials and UV plexiglass. The original gallery label from The Contemporaries has been preserved and affixed to the new backing, and the collector who acquires this work will also be provided with a copy of the original receipt - signed by Karl Lunde (director of the Contemporaries and author of a major monograph on the artist). Measurements: Frame: 32 x 28 x 2 inches Artwork: 21 x 25 inches This work was first exhibited in the groundbreaking, and career-making 1960 exhibition at The Contemporaries gallery (New York, February 29, 1960 - March 19, 1960) and was featured in the exhibition catalogue, shown in the images here. In his essay entitled "Richard Anuszkiewicz: Color Precisionist" by art historian John T. Spike, he writes, "In the spring of '57, Richard Anuszkiewicz left Ohio for good. "I was ready. I came to New York with a substantial amount of work. I was ready to go around to the galleries and I was prepared because I really had something. I had an idea. I had a series of paintings that showed this idea and I felt good about it and I felt now that's the only place for me to be." A friend helped him get a job touching up the plaster models of classical temples and statues in the Junior Museum of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He took off six months the next year to travel around Europe in a Volkswagen, also seeing some places in North Africa. "When I came back, I remember taking my work around to the galleries and receiving interesting comments — positive comments from the various people. But Abstract Expressionism was very popular. My things were very hard-edged, very strong in color — a use of color that nobody was using. Everybody would say. 'Oh, they are nice, but so hard to look at. They hurt my eyes". Leo Castelli considered him seriously but the gallery was developing a specialization in pop artists like Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. "I can remember going to Martha Jackson and having her look at the work and she would put her hands straight out in front of her and block out parts of the painting with her hand and she'd say, mmm no rest areas." He finally caught on with The Contemporaries Gallery in the fall of 1959. The gallery at 992 Madison Avenue mainly represented new European talent. Karl Lunde, the gallery director, saw some of his canvases hanging...

MODERNIST DRAWING New Hope Mid-Century WPA Abstract Non-Objective Jazz Modern
Located in New York, NY
MODERNIST DRAWING New Hope Mid-Century WPA Abstract Non-Objective Jazz Modern. Signed with a "Ramstonev" stamp lower right. RAMSTONEV Cooperative Art Project (1937-1939). In the late 1930s, Charles Ramsey became close friends with Charles Evans and Louis Stone. He persuaded them to join him teaching his New Hope summer classes in non-objective painting. Soon, a history-making collaboration began. In 1937, meeting in Evans' studio at the rear of Cryer's Hardware store on Main Street in New Hope, a decision was made to establish the Co-Operative Painting Project. They were intrigued by the cooperative ad-lib process by which jazz musicians created their music. Believing this to be the quintessential American contribution to music, they theorized that a similar result might be obtainable with art, a "visual jam session." This particlarly fascinated Ramsey, who was a jazz buff and had a large collection of jazz records. The objective was to jointly collaborate in the creation of a painting as well as applying collective criticism during its creation. By creating forward movement by general consent, they believed they could produce a higher level of beauty. By consensus it was decided that subject matter would be non-objective. Up to eight people would participate and stop when the painting "felt" finished by common agreement. These co-operative works were done in several different mediums- the majority in pastel, but some in watercolor, gouache, graphite or cut paper collage. On occasion, the group would create a series, as opposed to a single work, created in steps by three or four artists. One of the occasional participants was famed New Hope poet, Stanley Kunitz. These series could range in number from four to sixteen paintings in each. The first of a series would be very basic and the last a fully finished work. In the scope of importance among the New Hope Modernist...

FUTURIST TOWNSCAPE
By Dorothy Browdy Kushner
Located in Los Angeles, CA
DOROTHY BROWDY KUSHNER "FUTURIST TOWNSCAPE" GOUACHE, SIGNED AMERICAN, C.1950 28 X 20 INCHES Dorothy Browdy Kushner 1909-2000 Color, light and place were paramount. The dramatic landscape of Southern California, where she produced most of her paintings, prints, and sculpture from the 1940s through 1990s, was a continual source of inspiration. Building on her formal artistic training in New York and the Midwest, her greatest achievement was her synthesis of Modernism with the local subjects and visual character of her environment. Dorothy Ruth Browdy was born in 1909 to Russian immigrants in Kansas City, Missouri, the eldest of five children. She became interested in art after winning first prize at a state high school competition. In 1928, after attending Kansas City Teachers College and starting a job as an elementary school teacher, Browdy continued at the Kansas City Art Institute, where she studied with Thomas Hart Benton. During summer vacations, she traveled with her sister Esther Browdy (Selikoff), also a teacher and an artist. They took painting road trips to New Mexico, California, and Mexico, where they saw first-hand both pre-Colombian monuments and the frescoes then being painted by the Mexican muralists. Other summers, Browdy studied at the Chicago Art Institute, the University of Wisconsin, and New York’s Art Students League, where she worked with Reginald Marsh. In 1937-38, Browdy moved to New York City to pursue a Masters Degree in Education at Columbia University Teachers College. She returned to Kansas City and taught high school for two more years before moving to New York and taking a job teaching High School in Queens. During this time she painted a variety of figurative compositions and watercolor cityscapes influenced by the Ashcan school, and produced Art Deco-inspired graphic design and children’s book illustrations. In 1946 Browdy married Joseph Kushner and moved to Altadena, California, where she gave birth to their son, Robert. This change of scenery and lifestyle precipitated the most significant change in her work. Living for the first time outside of an urban setting, the artist was taken by the physical beauty of her new environment. She began experimenting with modernist styles to paint this light-infused world, and in the subsequent decades created her largest body of work. On moving to California, Kushner studied with some of the watercolorists, such as James Couper Wright who specialized in a large scale, free and open expression of the technique. However, in frequent visits to the Pasadena Art Museum (now the Norton Simon Museum of Art) Kushner also became interested in its significant collection of German Expressionist paintings and prints. In particular, Lyonel Feininger’s geometricized approach to landscape and cityscape prompted her to move away from realism and to focus instead on a full fledged Modernism that resulted in a series she referred to as Prismatics. The Museum also introduced her to the works of Alexej Jawlensky...
