About the Item
Vertical charcoal drawing on Arches paper
18 x 13 inches unframed
25 x 20 inches in black metal frame with AR non-glare glass & 8-ply mat
This contemporary, abstract charcoal drawing on high quality Arches paper was completed by East Hampton based artist, Ralph Stout, in 2006. Heavy black lines in dark charcoal are used to create abstracted fruit formations that contrast against a solid grey background. The bulbous black and grey shaded shapes are suggestive of grapes or a cluster of berries. The shading and foreground of the drawing is completed with loose, gestural marks of charcoal. The simple yet graphic drawing incorporates abstracted fruit still lifes with a modern twist. The drawing is complimented with a black metal frame with AR non-glare glass and an 8-ply mat. The frame has sturdy wire on the back for hanging. The artist's signature is located in the lower left corner.
About Stout & his work:
Ralph Stout graduated from Bucknell University in 1960 with a degree in mathematics and an enduring interest in the visual arts. Despite the demands of a series of day jobs, he always found time for artistic pursuits, and when the opportunity finally arose to devote all of his time to the arts, he pounced on it. Over the past several years, Stout has become an accomplished abstractionist. His acrylic paintings on canvas and board, which often exploit the tension between the putative foreground and the background of an image, are colorful, hard-edged and to the point. His works on paper reveal a draughtsman's attitude toward abstract form and his photographs a critic’s take on the human condition. Stout currently lives and works in East Hampton, NY.
