About the Item

137, Pencil Drawing by Richard Lin 1933-2011, 1960 Additional information: Medium: Pencil 30 1/4 x 35 1/8 in 77 x 89 cm signed, dated and titled Executed in pencil against stark white, this exploration of line references Taoist concepts that are a regular theme of Richard Lin’s work but that he seems to process through a western art historical lens, alluding to American minimalism alongside architects including Le Corbusier. Lin was beginning to exhibit internationally around the time this work was produced, following his first solo shows at the ICA and then at Gimpel Fils in 1969. In this example, Lin varies the thickness of line on the individual linear forms which creates a meditative, contemplative feel emphasised further by the shapes overlapping in places. Provenance Wenlock Fine Art; Private Collection, London. Born in Taichung, Taiwan, and brought up to be the heir to Wufeng Lin's fortune - one of the most influential families in the country, Lin was sent to the UK to be educated and to the disbelief of his family, he renounced his inheritance to become an artist. Having studied architecture at Regent St Polytechnic by day and painting by night, once he graduated in 1958 he turned to painting full-time. This experience undoubtedly influence the structured, minimalist style in which he works, as well as his predilection to work using plastic and metal. Early in his career he worked under the name Lin Show Yu, however, by 1959, and his first solo show at Gimpel Fils, London, he was exhibiting as Richard Lin. Soon his name was recognised internationally: he received an award at the 'Chinese Modern Sculpture Exhibition' organised by Taipei Fine Arts Museum and, in 1964, he was invited to participate in Documenta 3 in Kassel, Germany, becoming the first Chinese artist to take part in the prestigious exhibition. In 1967 Lin was chosen to participate in the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh, and along with Francis Bacon was awarded the William Frew Memorial Purchase Award. His wall pieces reveal a connection with the work of Donald Judd and more broadly, American minimalism, whilst his drawings and more painterly work point back to Chinese, Taiwanese ink drawings. Lin's work can be found in the public collections at the Tate Gallery, London, Arts Council, London, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and several public institutions internationally

Difficult Furniture (toity)
By Mark Masyga
Located in New York, NY
24"x30" oil, graphite on canvas, signed on reverse by the artist. This contemporary abstract painting by New York artist, Mark Masyga is visually laid out with painted lines of color intertwined and layered on top of each other. The neutral warm grey ground is activated by the multiple layers of paths of blues, beige, cream white, dark greys and near blacks, interspersed with fine curved and bent lines of light green, orange, lavender and rose pink. This is an engaging linear abstract painting with an immense visual depth of field. This painting is featured in a solo show released by the Front Room Gallery in New York, entitled, "Charitable Deceptions". In this new body of work, the title “Charitable Deceptions,” refers to a passage written by Gabriel García Márquez in which, “…memory eliminates the bad and magnifies the good.” Mark Masyga ruminates on this concept through his process of addition and subtraction in his compositional constructions. The linear abstract paintings in this exhibition chronicle a passage of time as explored through the artist’s application...
