About
'Dramatic', watercolor and pencil, c. 1940s. Signed 'R.S.' in pencil, lower left image, and again in the lower right sheet corner. Titled in the lower left margin. A fine, modernist 'improvisation', with fresh colors, on cream wove paper; the full sheet with margins (1/2 to 1 1/2 inch), laid onto a backing sheet of drawing paper by the artist. This work apparently created on a piece of scrap paper (as was the often artist's custom) with notations and pencil lines in the right margin, intentionally left by the artist and extending into the image; punch holes in the outside left margin; in overall good, original condition. Image size 4 3/8 x 6 1/2 inches; sheet size 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches. Matted to museum standards, unframed.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Painter, designer, and printmaker, Rolph Scarlett is well known for his important contributions to the development of 20th-century American abstract art. Solomon Guggenheim collected many of his works and, in 1940, made him chief lecturer at the Museum of Non-Objective Painting (later to become the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum), a position he held until 1949.
Scarlett's work was exhibited widely throughout his career and is represented in the collections of the Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum, and British Museum, among many other institutions.
