Shoby Modjarrad. 16.9 Oz = 20 Minutes II Pen & Pencil on Wood Panel 1.25" D x 5.5" W x 5.5" H One of a kind. Shown in private artist show "One Day". Modjarrad has distorted the size of these objects because their impact is larger than meets the eye. A vast amount of energy, thought, and engineering rests behind such innovations, yet we may only use them for a second. We have become so dependent on many of these items, if not all. In fact they are nothing but disposable daily items to us. Shoby Modjarrad deeply values the beauty that exists all around her and is increasingly mindful of her impact on nature and the environment. And, as an artist, she invites her audience to see the world through her discerning eyes. Shoby spent the first eight and a half years of her career in architecture, having earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in the field from the University of Texas and Columbia University, respectively. When she grew tired of spending her life cooped up in an office, she decided to embark on her own as an independent artist. Shoby's love for creation began at a relatively early age. When she was four years old, living with her family in Iran, she remembers scribbling rudimentary drawings, and as children do, believing they were obviously horses. Her father would smile in approval and encourage her to keep it up. Her affinity for collecting also began in Iran, as she spent her childhood finding random objects while out playing or walking down the street and bringing them home. As a young adult, Shoby focused her passion for art on architecture, and even now, the training and experience she earned impacts the way she sees the world and constructs her art. Her love for the colors and detail in nature, from the organic striations in sediment to moss and rust naturally occurring on stones and metal, also serves as a constant teacher and perhaps most heavily influences what and how she chooses to create. Several years ago, Shoby was invited to a special screening of the documentary Bag It, and her life was forever changed. The film sheds light on the effects of consumer plastic on everything from our nation's physical health to the world's ecosystem. She made it a point in her own life to try to use less plastic, and she began a project titled "One Day" wherein she collected every piece of plastic she used each day and photographed it. Then she let the idea simmer in the back of her mind for four years, all the while collecting more and more trash, before she settled on how she wanted to use what she'd collected. Shoby still hoards trash and uses it for inspiration or as elements of her art. Sometimes she takes obscure plastic items and cuts them in half, photographs them from varying angles, and then draws what she sees. And sometimes she creates sculptural paintings using the art itself as a medium. Where most people might see merely an empty tube of toothpaste and its lid or a used lip gloss container and a straw, Shoby sees structure and invention in the items everyone else uses and haphazardly throws away. This focus on plastic and trash collection/up-cycling isn't all Shoby does... she also works with glass and en-caustic painting. She hikes and explores and studies the environment. She makes jewelry and dishes. She does not like to constrain herself to one medium or subject. But all of this is a reflection of her unique viewpoint. A viewpoint that will hopefully inspire others to more closely consider the world around us.
