About the Item
Moiré Indigo (Abstract painting)
Acrylic on paper and Netting - Framed.
Image's dimensions: 32 x 29 cm/12.5 x 11.4".
The Moiré project is an exercise in optical and formal aesthetics.
Each individual artwork is made purely of two, straight edged, shaped sections of mosquito netting folded and layered over and around each other. The frame, and in particular the glass itself, is vital to the construction of each piece so much so that without the glass the constraining element would evaporate, the mosquito netting would spring open, and the effect would vanish.
Tom Henderson
Tom Henderson creates reductive, geometric image-objects that exist at a liminal intersection between painting and sculpture. Born in the UK, Henderson currently lives and works in Provence, in the South of France. After studying with renowned ceramicist Gordon Baldwin at Eton College, Henderson earned his BFA in Fine Art with an emphasis in sculpture from University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1998. Henderson has exhibited extensively throughout Europe and the UK, with selected exhibitions in the US and Mexico. Recent exhibitions include The Observance Chapel, Draguignan, France; Château Thuerry, Provence, France; Bethlehem Kirche, Meerbusch, Germany; and Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Tamaulipas, Mexico City. The simplest reading of Henderson’s work is that he is a painter with the sensibility of a sculptor and that his works are hung flat on a wall. His works are never fully flat, however, and they are more architectonic than pictorial. Their three-dimensional presence activates the surrounding spaces, demanding mobility from the viewer to fully experience the work. Henderson incorporates a wide range of mediums into his practice, centering on commercial materials such as cast acrylic, aluminum, spray paint, and automotive paint. The sleek, vivid, industrial presence of such materials instantly evokes the legacy of Minimalist artists like Donald Judd. However, unlike Minimalists who hid the hand and personality of the artist in favour of creating an impersonal material statement of reduction and form, Henderson enthusiastically makes work that instigates personal connections with viewers.

Little Blue (Abstract Geometric Mixed Media Encaustic Work on Wooden Panel)
By Donise English
Located in Hudson, NY
Little Blue, 2020
Encaustic & collage on thin edged board
12" X 12"
This abstract geometric composition on wooden board features a playful geometric motif that is inspired by the artist's interest in architecture and blueprint drawings. The geometric forms are made in a more painterly, gestural manner rather than with a hard edge. Paint is not heavily built up upon the surface but it certainly exhibits a tactile quality which is characteristic of the artist's aesthetic. English's work celebrates the quirky, unexpected qualities of shapes and colors.
About the artist:
Donise English is a Poughkeepsie-based artist who received her MFA from Bard College and is currently a Professor of Studio Art at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY.
Artist Statement:
I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure.
