About the Item

Tom Martinelli works with simple rounded shapes, fields of color and the character of a painted edge. Using stencils, paint rollers and spray paint he minimize the hands presence while covering large areas with a few attentive motions and materializing preferred a ‘imperfection.’ Non-measured placement of form creates unexpected asymmetries suggesting a universe of gravitational repulsion and attraction, compression and expansion. Geometry has always been a grounding vehicle for abstraction. It can act as an architecture that needs no explanation. It doesn’t require a reference to things in the world and can open the possibility of a wordlessly rich experience. Having a history and practice of yoga and meditation Martinelli feels an affinity with both Agnes Martin and Kasimir Malevich, each of whom engaged in painting that sought to embody what Malevich referred to as “pure feeling.” "Feeling’ that isn’t generated as a response to something but which simply exists as its own deep and natural substratum. Abstraction and geometry have a capacity to move viewers towards this "pure feeling" as they reflect on their own unfolding perceptual experience. Martinelli’s art-making practice has largely focused on color and abstract painting after earning his MFA at Hunter College, New York. Martinelli has had numerous solo exhibitions in New York and his artwork included in many group exhibitions in New York, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Pittsburgh, among other cities. His paintings have been exhibited internationally in Vienna, Austria, London and Manchester, England. Martinelli has received many grants and fellowships, including the distinguished Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award twice. His artwork has been reviewed in numerous publications including "New York Magazine", "ARTnews", "Modern Painters", "New York Times", "Art + Auction", "Review Magazine" and "THE Magazine".
