About the Artist:
Willard Ayers Nash (1898-1942), born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was a talented American painter and key figure in the Santa Fe art scene. Nash is often referred to as "the American Cézanne" for his innovative approach to color and form, heavily influenced by the French Post-Impressionist's techniques. Nash studied at the Detroit School of Fine Arts before moving to Santa Fe in 1921, where he lived and worked for over 15 years, solidifying his reputation as an influential artist.
In 1921, Nash co-founded Los Cinco Pintores, Santa Fe's first modernist art group, alongside fellow painters Jozef Bakos, Fremont Ellis, Will Shuster, and Walter Mruk. Known for their radical approach to color and composition, Nash and his contemporaries brought a fresh, dynamic style to the Santa Fe art community, culminating in their groundbreaking exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe in December 1921.
Nash's exploration of color, light, and landscape led to significant recognition, with critics praising his ability to capture the essence of the American Southwest through his own unique lens. Throughout his career, Nash's work shifted from academic realism to modernism and abstraction, with influences from Cézanne and Picasso evident in his later works.
Nash’s art was featured in prestigious exhibitions, including the Whitney Museum of American Art’s biennials and the "Abstract Art in America" show in 1935. Despite his growing success, Nash’s career was tragically cut short when he died of tuberculosis at the age of 44. His works continue to be celebrated for their originality and lasting impact on American modern art.
This drawing is a rare and remarkable piece from an artist whose bold vision and innovative techniques continue to inspire today.
