About the Item

This original charcoal drawing on paper by influential American modernist Willard Ayers Nash (1898–1942) is a powerful example of early 20th-century abstraction rooted in the Santa Fe Modernist movement. Created circa 1920s–30s, this dynamic work—titled “Abstract”—features an abstracted landscape composition, emphasizing Nash’s command of line, form, and expressive rhythm. Rendered in rich, tonal charcoal, the drawing showcases Nash’s bold departure from academic realism, embracing modernist principles influenced by Cézanne and early Cubism. A compelling blend of structure and spontaneity, this piece embodies Nash's unique interpretation of the American Southwest through abstraction. The artwork is presented in a custom black wood frame. Framed dimensions: 22 x 20 x ¾ inches Image size: 14 ½ x 12 ¾ inches About the Artist: Willard Ayers Nash (1898–1942) A pioneering force in American modernism, Willard Nash was born in Philadelphia and educated at the Detroit School of Fine Arts. In 1921, he moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he became a central figure in the region’s artistic transformation. Nash co-founded Los Cinco Pintores, Santa Fe’s first modernist art collective, alongside Jozef Bakos, Fremont Ellis, Walter Mruk, and Will Shuster. Together, they introduced bold experimentation to the Southwestern art scene, challenging traditional norms with avant-garde compositions and vivid abstractions. Often referred to as "the American Cézanne," Nash developed a personal style that blended Post-Impressionist structure with modernist abstraction, capturing the essence of the Southwest’s landscapes and cultural vitality. Nash’s life was tragically cut short by tuberculosis in 1942, but his legacy endures through works that continue to resonate with collectors, curators, and scholars of early American abstraction. This rare drawing is not only a collector-grade piece of American modern art history—it’s also a window into the early abstract movement of the American Southwest, from one of its boldest visionaries.

20th century Belgium, Black and White Abstract pencil drawing, Etude
By Marcel Dumont
Located in Woodbury, CT
Outstanding pencil on paper Abstract drawing. Marcel Dumont was a Liège artist who painted in oils and gouache, also produced collages and was an illustrator and engraver, doing so in a number of different styles. Early on in his career, he tended to produce paintings displaying a poetic realism but this changed over time until, in 1957, he was employing geometric abstraction and later still, the influence of pop art could be discerned. His geometric style has strong linear structure which occasionally veers to expressionism and the effect of this is an interesting sense of detachment that the viewer of the work can feel and one engages with the subject on a different level than one would normally expect. A critic wrote of him," Sometimes expressionist, sometimes linear, the abstraction forms itself willingly, in Marcel Dumont's world, to leave the rectangular structure to connect to carefully prepared tones. He retains also, in his abundant output, a few poetic pop-art collages together with a number of drawings and engravings illustrating Stefan Zweig...
