Chicago-based artist William J. O’Brien is a versatile creative talent who explores various artistic mediums, including drawing, painting, ceramics, metal sculpture, installations, and assemblage. He draws inspiration from Modernism and the historical material practices of Outsider Art. O’Brien's artistic journey encompasses a quest for self-identity and authentic expression through his chosen materials and creative processes. His extensive body of work in these diverse media showcases a vibrant explosion of color, intricate patterns, and an abundance of artistic exuberance.
O’Brien's artistic career has included solo exhibitions at prestigious institutions such as the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, the Renaissance Society in Chicago, KMAC Museum in Louisville, MAD Museum in New York City, Witte De With in Rotterdam, and The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, among others. Notably, in 2014, he had his inaugural comprehensive museum retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, which was curated by Naomi Beckwith. He has also participated in artistic residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and the U-Cross Foundation.
O’Brien's artistic accomplishments have earned him recognition, including awards from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation and Artadia. His artworks have found a place in the permanent collections of esteemed institutions such as the Cleveland Clinic, New York Presbyterian Hospital, Miami Art Museum, Pérez Art Museum, Hammer Museum, Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, and The Art Institute of Chicago. Beyond his creative endeavors, O’Brien holds the position of Professor and serves as the Chair of Ceramics at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
