Essay:
This exquisite red chalk drawing by Adam Frans van der Meulen depicts a horse lying on its right side, viewed from the front. It serves as a preparatory study for the left horse featured in one of the plates from the series of ten etchings titled Horses Wounded in Battle (see image), by Jan van Huchtenberg (1647–1733) after van der Meulen’s drawings. The series was published between 1662 and 1690 under van der Meulen’s supervision (Hollstein 41; Bartsch V. 425; Weigel 1843).
Adam Frans van der Meulen, best known for his military scenes and landscapes, was granted a royal patent by Louis XIV to have his designs engraved and published. He assembled a team of skilled Flemish and Dutch printmakers, including Adriaen Frans Boudewijns, Abraham Genoels, Jan van Huchtenberg, and Romeyn de Hooghe, to translate his work into prints. The French engraver Robert Bonnart also collaborated with van der Meulen, producing and selling prints under his direction.
Van der Meulen’s designs—many of which depict landscapes, battles, and military life—were engraved and distributed to private clients. His prints were initially sold from his lodgings at the Gobelins Manufactory and later distributed by publishers and merchants. In 1670, he arranged for 13 large-scale engravings representing royal conquests and sieges to be created for the King’s Cabinet, which were later published by the Royal Printing Office in 1679. These engravings solidified his role as a propagandist for Louis XIV, contributing to the Sun King’s iconic image.
This drawing highlights van der Meulen’s masterful observation of anatomy and movement, capturing the vitality and pathos of his equestrian subjects.

Shepherd with Sheep, Cows and a Goat in a Landscape by Jan Frans Soolmaker
Located in Stockholm, SE
This painting depicts a pastoral scene that is attributed to the artist Jan Frans Soolmaker, an artist known for his Italianate landscapes and scenes that often feature equestrian and Arcadian elements. The painting is not signed but is attributed to Soolmaker, relating it to a known signed work by the artist that was sold at Sotheby’s London in 1999.
The scene is suffused with the warm glow of a setting or rising sun, casting a soft light that is characteristic of Soolmaker’s landscapes. It shows a shepherd guiding a group of cattle across a shallow stream, with the animals taking center stage in the composition. The animals are rendered with careful attention to their forms and the play of light on their bodies, which is a hallmark of Soolmaker's work. The landscape is composed of a rocky terrain with trees and shrubbery, creating a sense of depth and natural beauty that invites the viewer to explore the scene further.
The background suggests a vast, open landscape with distant mountains, which adds to the Italianate feel of the painting. The sky is dramatic, with clouds catching the light of the sun, contributing to the overall serene yet dynamic atmosphere of the work.
The provenance of the painting is notable, having been in the possession of significant historical figures such as Swedish Prince Fredrik Adolf, and later The collection of Pär Ulmgren, The collection of Gösta Stenman, and Engineer and politician Gustaf Henry Hansson.
Potential buyers have the option of choosing between a newly made gold frame or an older brown frame, which allows for personalization in how the work is presented.
Soolmaker’s work is often compared to that of Dutch painter Nicolaes Berchem, whose style he emulated. Soolmaker's landscapes reflect a similar sensitivity to light and composition, making his works sought after for their beauty and historical significance. Despite the smaller body of work left by Soolmaker, due to his short career, his paintings are valued for their craftsmanship and the legacy of the artist’s brief but impactful contribution to the Dutch Italianate landscape genre.

In his time Wouterus Verschuur was an acclaimed and celebrated painter of horses. Through careful observation he learned to capture their physique and movement to perfection. As a true-born romanticist he was also interested in their character, thereby painting powerful carthorses in their stable, thoroughbred saddled horses during an afternoon ride or harnessed horses in action.
He was born to an Amsterdam jeweler and received his training from the landscape and cattle painters Pieter Gerardus van Os and Cornelis Steffelaar. As part of this education Verschuur had to copy works by the 17th century painter Philips Wouwerman. Like Wouwerman, Verschuur's subjects consist mostly of stable scenes, landscapes with horses and coastal landscape. These works reflect the enduring influence of the northern Baroque masters on nineteenth century art, revealing the artist's close study of his Dutch and Flemish predecessors harking back to Peter Paul Rubens.
Showing talent from a very early age, at 15 Verschuur had a painting exhibited at the "Exhibition of Living Masters" at Amsterdam in 1828. In 1832 and 1833 he won the gold medal at the annual exhibition at Felix Meritis. In 1833 he was appointed a member of the Royal Academy in Amsterdam. In 1839 he joined the artists' society, Arti et Amicitiae.
His reputation was also considerable abroad. He was often featured in the annual exhibitions which travelled the large European cities at that time. In 1855 Napoleon III purchased one of his paintings at the Exposition Universelle in Paris.
The Verschuur horse revels in its physicality, like a quintessential Baroque horse...
