About the Item

Monkeys is an original pencil drawing on paper realized by an anonymous artist in the XX century. Including a white cardboard passepartout: 49 x 34 cm. Good conditions, except for a light shading of paper. This fine modern artwork represents different sketches of monkeys in various poses. On the back of the drawing, the artist drew other monkey sketches. Ernest Rouart (Paris, 1874 – Paris, 1942) was a French painter, illustrator, engraver, and art collector. He was the son of Henri Rouart and the brother of Eugène Rouart. He married Julie Manet, the daughter of Berthe Morisot and Eugène Manet. With her wife, he offered many artworks to the Musée du Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay, and contributed to promote Manet's, Degas's, and Morisot's artworks with important exhibitions. He studied mathematics, but he soon changed his mind and decided to dedicate himself to art and to painting in particular. Edgar Degas, who was one of the closest friends of Ernest Rouart, introduced him to painting. Degas introduced him to Julie Manet, who eventually became his wife; they lived at Rue de Villejust, where also Jeanne Gobillard and her husband Paul Valéry, a friend of Degas, lived. Ernest Rouart was also an important art collector: he acquired many Impressionist collections and, during the War, he obtained the permission to sell Degas's works. In 1899, he participated in the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, the Salon des Indépendants, and the Salon of the Teilleries. This artwork is shipped from Italy. Under existing legislation, any artwork in Italy created over 70 years ago by an artist who has died requires a licence for export regardless of the work’s market price. The shipping may require additional handling days to require the licence according to the final destination of the artwork.

It is in this artistic universe that he grew up playing with colors, modeling the earth, pampered by his young mother, who dreamed of making a teacher of her. Very early on, his father, seeing his passion for drawing, encouraged him, introduced him to the Jardin des Plantes, where he developed a passion for the big cats that he practiced drawing. For the Universal Exhibition of 1900, the architect Binet, commissioned a frieze of wild animals of more than 100m representing tigers, bears, lions, bulls, and mouflons. This frieze will be executed in greenish brown glazed flamed sandstone by the sculptor Alexandre Bigot. Binet also ordered four lions from him to decorate the main gate of the Champs Elysees, between the two palaces, and a monumental statue representing a rooster wings outstretched in the center of the gate. In 1907, Jouve was awarded a scholarship from the General Government of Algeria, and along with Léon Cauvy...
