Omaha based artist Joseph Broghammer is as much of a storyteller as he is an artist. His one-of-a-kind pastel drawings in “Animals” are chronicles of his life. The creatures Broghammer creates are vehicles to uncover the varying characteristics of the artist’s personal identity.
Hence, Broghammer’s “Animals” translates as a flowing stream of consciousness. The different birds and livestock staring back at the viewer are ornamented with iconographic symbols – small surprises along the way. These trinkets are keys to understanding the stories Broghammer is sharing.
Broghammer began mastering his “dry painting” technique during his B.F.A. in Visual Art at the University of South Dakota. He graduated in 1986 and a year later went on to study his M.F.A. at the University of Wisconsin. In 2009, he studied at Creative Capital in Omaha, Nebraska.

Using sumi ink to "print" the octopus, the artist then embellishes it with colored pencil to convey an extraordinary dimensionality. Gyotaku - A Japanese word translated from "gyo" meaning fish and "taku" meaning stone impression and is believed to get its inspiration from Chinese stone rubbings of calligraphy, which then gave rise to printing . In October 2023 Isabel won the Evelyn Williams Drawing Award at the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize. Known as the UK’s most prestigious annual open exhibition for drawing; part of the prize is a solo show at Hastings Contemporary, scheduled for 2024.
Whilst Isabel always has a tale to tell for each of her images, you may or may not choose to go on the journey with her or you may indeed have a different story, one of your own that jumps off the page at you and that that you decide to follow.

The Long Story of the Dancing Horse of the Day
In Rock's own words,
'With seven long strides I traversed a might ocean, the salt spray dried my throat and crusted my lips with crystals. With eight huge hops I vaulted a vast desert of sand dunes, hot sand blew in my eyes, blocked my nostrils and burnt my hooves. With nine large leaps I scaled a stone wall that stretched to the skies, the cold grey lumps seemed to penetrate my heart with their silent indifference. I had come to dance before the Queen who had heard rumours of my beauty. I knelt before her in the great long throne room.
'Your majesty,' I said, 'I will dance for you but you must know that this comes with a price. How great the price will be I cannot tell, it will depend on your deepest heart.'
'Dance,' she commanded, 'I care not for such things. There is no price, I am the Queen.'
So I tapped my hooves and jiggled my legs, I tossed my mane and I shook my head. I danced and I danced. My body shimmered and shone, radiant in the light of the chandeliers. As I danced a rumble began, it got louder and louder as the walls of the castle crumbled and fell around me. I carried on dancing until nothing was left and the Queen was nowhere to be seen. I assumed she was crushed under the rocks, but I had given her fair warning...

They are honest and full of life, evoking a sincere exchange between artist and viewer. “Animals” is for the animal lovers, students, teachers, collectors, writers, the young or old, and art historians alike.

Elin Siân Blake is a contemporary Brecon-based artist, originally from the South Wales valleys, whose work delves deeply into the rich tapestry of Welsh heritage. Through various mediums, she creates poignant reflections of societal and cultural issues that have shaped the Welsh identity.
Born in 1981, Elin Siân Blake began producing commissioned artwork from an early age, focussing on the traditional Welsh ponies and landscapes of her childhood. She was particularly inspired by the agricultural and equestrian events she attended. As a teenager she spent all her spare money on art supplies. Blake graduated from the University of Glamorgan in 2002 with a degree in graphic design and illustration, but quickly realised that she wanted to create conventional paintings, rather than producing digital images. She then spent several years living on the road in vintage vehicles, painting the scenes and characters she encountered on her travels.

David Wang is a native of Beijing, China. He gained his education from the Beijing Education College of China in 1984, where he learned various techniques in drawing, watercolor, oil painting, sculpture, graphic design, and Chinese watercolor. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts Degree, he became a fine arts teacher. During his eight years of teaching, he has taught hundreds of quality students, some becoming professional artists and cinematographers. Wang has also accomplished several major art and design projects, such as designing and creating an exhibit of the Terra-Cotta army warriors in the Forbidden City and interior designs for shopping plazas in Beijing.
In 1988, David came to the U.S as a visitor scholar and studied at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. After his studies in 1992, he continued his profession as a full-time artist. For twelve years, he had a successful career creating visual art for the Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida Studio. He worked as a senior background artist doing work from concept development to production final work. Omaha based artist Joseph Broghammer is as much of a storyteller as he is an artist. His one-of-a-kind pastel drawings in “Animals” are chronicles of his life. The creatures Broghammer creates are vehicles to uncover the varying characteristics of the artist’s personal identity.
Hence, Broghammer’s “Animals” translates as a flowing stream of consciousness. The different birds and livestock staring back at the viewer are ornamented with iconographic symbols – small surprises along the way. These trinkets are keys to understanding the stories Broghammer is sharing.
Broghammer began mastering his “dry painting” technique during his B.F.A. in Visual Art at the University of South Dakota. He graduated in 1986 and a year later went on to study his M.F.A. at the University of Wisconsin. In 2009, he studied at Creative Capital in Omaha, Nebraska.
