About the Item

Random Internet Cats
Robotically-fabricated drawings on paper, these series formally deal with mediation from screen image to ‘drawing’ while using a computer-controlled pen plotter. In this case, the pen holder is suspended by two toothed cables creating a swinging motion of the carriage, creating a random element in creating the mark. For me, creating a generative image, which refers to artists like Roman Verostko and Harold Cohen with an imprecise method of control again creates issues about drawing as having a particularly ‘human’ gesture. Conceptually RIC’s come from the pervasiveness of cat culture on the Internet as a distant cousin of Marisa Olson’s ideas of ‘internet-aware’ culture as part of her idea of the postinternet. The RIC series started as a playful satire on Internet culture. However, the emergence of my connection of kittens vs. drones emphasize the critical issues of drones throughout the world, the fact that many of our pets are in fact ‘predators’, ad that the First World Internet denizen’s eyes may be more focused on kittens than drones. This is expressed through the gesture of these kittens swatting at drones like flies or birds. Patrick Lichty is a conceptual artist, curator, and theorist exploring how media shapes our perception of reality as well as the borders between the digital and the material. He is best known for his work with the virtual reality performance art group Second Front, and the animator of the activist group, The Yes Men. He is a CalArts/Herb Alpert Fellow and Whitney Biennial exhibitor as part of the collective RTMark. He is a Lecturer of Digital Studio Practice at the Peck School of the Arts in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
