Ink drawing on paper
Signed in pencil, bottom right.
Titled in pencil, bottom left.
An energetic and surreal artwork presents a highly stylized and anthropomorphic rainforest frog. The frog features large, prominent eyes with bright blue irises, and curiously, a pair of human-like ears with dangling earrings. Its body is outlined in black, with segments filled with vibrant colors and bold geometric patterns. Frogs tummy bursts with yellow, purple concentric circles, while its limbs are adorned with fuchsia pink spots against a white background. From its mouth, its long amphibian tongue extends upwards towards its prey, a fantastical, stylized fly. Scattered around the main figure are elements that echo the frog's form, such as stylized eyes with blue irises and white, spotted limbs, creating a sense of fragmentation or multiplication. The stark white background emphasizes the fantastical elements and bold lines of the creature, giving the piece a whimsical and dreamlike quality that blends natural forms with abstract, decorative patterns.
This drawing is framed in a simple, black frame, backed with white mounting board, with the deckled edge of the paper visible. Glass protects the art.
Paul Jauregui Artist Statement:
"My Name is Paul Jauregui, a New York born Latin American artist who has kept the environment close to my work for more than 25 years. My Father was a very talented and meticulous fine art restorer. He also served as my very early inspiration since I spent my diaper years in his Manhattan studio crawling though his oils, canvases, pencils, and palette knives.
I am a self taught artist who grew up in South America. At the age of 19 my passion was rekindled by a blind friend who needed to interact with my sketches, textures and stories, pushing my mixed media work into textured settings for communication.
I feel blessed to share my work to the world inspired in my magical home land, Ecuador, having lived in the Amazon jungle, studying about frogs in the Cloud Forest, admiring condors in the Andean Highlands, learning all about biodiversity and creation in the Galapagos Islands, searching for the coexistence of the tactile and engaging all of the senses through touch, color and sounds with a great will to create cultural and conservation awareness in the bio-challenging world.
I love my country and have assumed, through my art and designs, a decisive defense of nature at risk and have created social encounters with ancestral expressions from the indigenous people of this blessed continent."
