About the Item

"Taxco" is a watercolor signed by Carl Pappe, and dated 1989. It is a living example of the artist's sophisticated yet simple painting method. This watercolor serves as evidence of the quote beloved by defenders of quantum theory: "Who picks a flower disturbs a star." One can say that abstraction, in its process of elaboration and manifestation, in every detail, is an activation of an invisible frequency field that structures and provokes the emotion that we always evoke with difficulty when it comes to putting it in words. This Papp's, delicate work of watercolor, with pink and orange tints, densified by black ink tracings and forms, recalls certain works on paper by Miro. It could be a tribute, and surely much more, a continuity, as the quality and delicate reception carry us and our five senses into a moment of poetic softness and hypnotic floating. But far behind the softness, we can experience another reality such as memories of persecution; a work like a ballet where life and death, colors and black, would answer each other like two performers becoming one and the same subject for eternity. Carl Lewis Pappe is far from being an unknown artist. A painter, sculptor, and printmaker, he was born in Hungary in 1900 and died in 1998. Pappe's prolific oeuvre included sculpture, pastel, oil painting, watercolor, and more, in the genres of realism and abstraction throughout his career. Following grade school, Pappe first enrolled at the Cleveland School of Art (not the Cleveland Institute of Art) from 1921 to 1925. Upon graduation, the Hungarian Society awarded him a full scholarship to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under Daniel Garber and Hugh Breckinridge. In the late 1930s, Pappe and Goodspeed opened a studio and gallery in the silver mining town of Taxco, where Pappe began to expand his personal art career, exhibiting in the U.S. and Mexico. As political uprising surged in the Mexican capital, the two artists established their home as a sanctuary for Mexican artists fleeing persecution by the Mexican government, including many of the artists who had welcomed them into Mexico. Pappe and Goodspeed remained in Taxco for the rest of their lives, and their gallery and home were often at the center of goings-on among the artists of Mexico and beyond. Pappe's prolific oeuvre included sculpture, pastel, oil painting, watercolor, drawings, and more, and he worked in the genres of realism and abstraction throughout his career. Pappe was a fellow of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he often showed throughout his career. His work is included in private and public collections worldwide, including a collection of abstract pastels at the Government of Guerrero, and in 1995 the Woodmere Museum in Philadelphia held a retrospective of over eighty of his works.

Peter Soriano works on relatively large sheets of Japanese paper with a tendency to work from something observed, ideally around him. He tends to be “in” the configuration that is the subject of the work. Soriano is fond of “systems” objects attached to other objects, such as the wiring plan of a room. But very often there are other shapes that play a role in the work. The artist would fold and rework a piece a number of times. Folding seems to concentrate the dialogue that attracts him. Reworking is part of his nature. The finished work normally is the result of this ebb and flow between the heightening and repositioning the relationship between forms. The title refers to Warren street where Soriano had his studio at that time. Peter Soriano is a Philippines-born French-American abstract artist who divides his time between New York City and Penobscot, Maine.
