About the Item

P.T.S.D. (Post Trump Series of Drawings) by Carla Rae Johnson The 87 satirical drawings displayed here are from a series that were produced one per week since November 9, 2016 (one day after the U.S. presidential election). The drawings relate to actions, events, and statements happening each week, and are intended to be, at the same time, as humorous, and as deadly serious as our situation. All drawings are original, 12”x 9” graphite on bristol-board (15”x 12” framed). The drawings depict a Kewpie-character in action. Here is why I chose this character: Kewpie, the impish character originally created by illustrator, Rose O’Neill and introduced by The Ladies’ Home Journal in 1909, immediately became a world-wide sensation, with thousands clamoring for the magazines, the images, and the dolls. During my childhood, gaudy plaster versions of the Kewpie-doll could be won at county fairs and carnivals. It is this cheap, bogus, derivative, Kewpie that sprang to my mind the day after the 2016 Presidential election. To my way of thinking, there is no better stand-in for the 45th President of the United States than a naughty Kewpie. The infantile, credulous, egotistical, delusional, and dangerous babbler can fittingly be represented by Kewpie. So, I (we) have given Kewpie free-reign in the White House to act out each week’s bizarre and brutal reality show. P.T.S.D. (Post Trump Series of Drawings) [Volume 1] can be purchased for $15.00 here, at ODETTA It includes 36 drawings with Tweets. The drawings in this exhibition will be featured in a second volume titled: P.T.S.D. 2. I will continue to produce these drawings until “Kewpie” is no longer in office. P.T.S.D. 2 can be purchased here at ODETTA It includes 48 drawings with Tweets. Carla Rae Johnson is a 2017 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellow in Drawing, and a 2005 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow in Sculpture. She is a 1990 recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. Her sculpture has been exhibited in solo, invitational, and curated shows in museums and galleries nationally as well as in New York City and is included in numerous public and private collections. In 2002, Carla Rae Johnson was commissioned to design a Cultural Tourism Center for Arts Westchester at the Arts Exchange Building in White Plains, NY. Ms. Johnson’s selected bibliography includes: The Aesthetics of Art: Understanding What We See, by Liza Renia Papi, published by Cognella, Inc.; Made in the U.S.A.: Modern/Contemporary Art in America, by Judy Collischan; Abstracts CAA New York City College Art Association Conference, 2003; Who’s Who in American Art (since 1992); Lines of Vision: Drawings by Contemporary Women Judy Collischan Van Wagner, Editor, 1989; Language as Object: Emily Dickinson and Contemporary Art, Susan Danly, Editor, 1997; A Dictionary of the Avant-Gardes, 2nd Edition, by Richard Kostelanetz, 2000; and Double Vision: Contemporary Artists Look at the Poetry of Emily Dickinson, by Maryanne M. Garbowsky, 2002. In addition to the P.T.S.D. volumes, Carla Rae Johnson co- authored a textbook on drawing: “Draw!” with Professor Laurie Steinhorst at Westchester Community College in Valhalla, NY. Directly connected to ideas, Carla Rae Johnson’s art often addresses issues of social, political, and cultural import. Her work includes drawing, sculpture, conceptual, performance, and installation art. She finds the most challenging forms and concepts at the intersection of the visual and the verbal and delights in communicating insights with humor, word-play, and not just a little irony. She also enjoys working collaboratively with artist/peers.

The idea for these edgy, Oedipal works came to him when he was leafing through a catalogue of de Kooning’s "Women" series. Prince started sketching over the paintings, and, as time went on, he began applying fragments cut and pasted from catalogues and vintage porn...
