About the Item

Roundism - 15-11-20 More Complex The previous drawing Roundism - 06-11-20 was set up rather elementary, contary to this one. As you may know by now I like to vary and decided to select a more complex motif. The reference picture from the 1920s or 1930s showed a model with lots of drapery and sheets around her. That would be perfect but offered also the challenge to render them in my roundism style. Besides that, still portraying distinctive features (drapery, sheets, folds, body) and also avoiding creating a messy rubble pile, I found a heavy task to bestowed with. Abstraction easily could cancel fragile and tender fabrics like the transparent cloth that shows the upstanding arm shimmering through. Interesting Body Parts Initially the reason to pick this motif was the attraction I felt for the thigh, the hip bone, buttocs up to the lattisimus dorsi. There it was: a great snake-like shadow figure streching out across the side of her body, contrasted by the sharp, angular hip bone. The scene was completed by the overall view of the main curve stretching out from head to toe. I skipped the contour delineation of the upper side of the leg so it would run over into the negative space, whereas in some parts I applied stronger contrasts between the positive and negative space. Let the Light Guide You In the end the light always make the difference. Light comes together with darkness and therefore I like chiaroscuro art works so much. In this particular case the light and shadow play make the scenery realistically plausible in spite my efforts to make it more abstract than it appears to be at first hand. Two for the price of one. Roundism - 20-08-20, Drawing, Pencil/Colored Pencil on Paper

Roundism - 20-08-20 Solarized Roundism After my drawing 'Roundism - 19-08-20' I put it as my goal to do another solarized one but a little bit less and more abstract. Drawn in my roundism style it looks essential and I did not need much but to be presented as a bodyscape. It is also inspired by my drawing 'Roundism - 08-09-16' that I like to call 'the deco one'. Eras Gone By Solarization as a visual element keeps lingering in my mind and I surely don't know why that is. I keep on thinking of eras gone by, like Art Deco, surrealism, Jugendstil and what have you not. Of course solarization and roundism are fruits from these artistic movements but then again from the past. Even though I was born and raised in an era of modern art, pre-Word War II-art is more appealing to me. I guess I am an aesthetic and therefor refute everything rude, ugly, mundane and repetitive like contemporary art has to offer these days. Whether it is television, architecture or art, it is all mediocre to be. In my eyes...

Roundism - 30-12-22, Drawing, Pencil/Colored Pencil on Paper

Last One This Year This graphite pencil drawing ˜Roundism “ 30-12-22 is the last one of this year. After Neo Deco “ 25-12-22 I wanted to end this year in the style that brought me success the last decade. One could also argue that I just dont know where this particular style is heading for anyway. Surely I have this other thing, called ˜Neo Deco but I am not sure yet where this is going. Recently I wrote about my uncertainties with regard of serving something old as a new style. That is how it feels like, sort of. Maybe its just that I am trying to forge something out of dusty air of a bygone era. Its definitely a topic I want to delve much deeper into in 2023. For now I named all things round ˜roundism and cubistically straight things ˜neo deco. A pretty daft distinction perhaps. What do you think? Golden Ratio The motif for this actual work was derived from a reference picture taken by Walter Bird. The last one I used one of his photos for was Art Deco Nude “ 23-08-22. Even though the style of photographing is typically art deco I think his work stands out compared to many others. Not only did he use heavy doses of light and dark but also cropped nudes within the frame nicely. The result is a perfect bodyscape image. Due to the striking roundness of the breasts and tilted body position I thought drawing roundish shapes were almost unavoidable. I spotted some nice curves I extrapolated outside the female form. The ones besides her hip culminated into the golden ratio curves. A suitable ending for this year. The ending and the beginning of something entwined, as it should be. So is my search for the eternal and essential in the temporary. Graphite pencil (Faber Castell...
