About the Item

Back from a Sore Back This graphite pencil drawing ˜Roundism “ 22-12-22 follows after ˜Neo Deco “ 10-12-22. Usually I make one drawing per week but my mind was occupied with an oil in progress. Another reason was that my back was killing me, unabling me to sit for more than 10 minutes. I could only lie down or stand straight up. Must have been that I sat down, drawing and posting online, for too long. Luckily all things bad come to pass as long one takes a rest. So back to drawing again. My oil of Melina can rest and dry now. Artistic Uncertainies Lately I notice the trend my drawings tends to become more realistic again. Since the development of my roundism style I came to a stand still more or less. How could I abstract bodily forms even more was the question I put myself regularly. Of course, true art is all about intention and to unreveal what is hidden from art viewers. Here is a big challenge for the artist. I remember a quote of Lucian Freud. He said that being an artist is the most difficult profession in the world. Most of the time he remains uncertain whether his art will make a difference or not. Could my roundism style evolve futher out of this uncertainty? What do I have to offer the public in this style not yet undisclosed? Round and Straight Contrasts I happened to have a great picture by a photographer under the mysterious name ˜CapitalistTools, dwelling on Deviantart. I dont know if he took it or if its just a repost. However, I was attracted by the beautiful distribution of light and darkness of the female form. Her curves contrasted the stool she is sitting on quite beautifully. So I started sketching with no particular plan, mimicing the realist style of the last drawing. It was after some time I decided to contrast the straightness of the stool with aforementioned curves even more. So I extrapolated them into the negative space, tying them to plinths and the wood floor. Hence it has become roundistic but realistic at the same time. It matches my aim of creating a depiction that is more abstract than it actually lets on. Roundism - 20-08-20, Drawing, Pencil/Colored Pencil on Paper

Roundism - 20-08-20 Solarized Roundism After my drawing 'Roundism - 19-08-20' I put it as my goal to do another solarized one but a little bit less and more abstract. Drawn in my roundism style it looks essential and I did not need much but to be presented as a bodyscape. It is also inspired by my drawing 'Roundism - 08-09-16' that I like to call 'the deco one'. Eras Gone By Solarization as a visual element keeps lingering in my mind and I surely don't know why that is. I keep on thinking of eras gone by, like Art Deco, surrealism, Jugendstil and what have you not. Of course solarization and roundism are fruits from these artistic movements but then again from the past. Even though I was born and raised in an era of modern art, pre-Word War II-art is more appealing to me. I guess I am an aesthetic and therefor refute everything rude, ugly, mundane and repetitive like contemporary art has to offer these days. Whether it is television, architecture or art, it is all mediocre to be. In my eyes...

Roundism - 30-12-22, Drawing, Pencil/Colored Pencil on Paper

Last One This Year This graphite pencil drawing ˜Roundism “ 30-12-22 is the last one of this year. After Neo Deco “ 25-12-22 I wanted to end this year in the style that brought me success the last decade. One could also argue that I just dont know where this particular style is heading for anyway. Surely I have this other thing, called ˜Neo Deco but I am not sure yet where this is going. Recently I wrote about my uncertainties with regard of serving something old as a new style. That is how it feels like, sort of. Maybe its just that I am trying to forge something out of dusty air of a bygone era. Its definitely a topic I want to delve much deeper into in 2023. For now I named all things round ˜roundism and cubistically straight things ˜neo deco. A pretty daft distinction perhaps. What do you think? Golden Ratio The motif for this actual work was derived from a reference picture taken by Walter Bird. The last one I used one of his photos for was Art Deco Nude “ 23-08-22. Even though the style of photographing is typically art deco I think his work stands out compared to many others. Not only did he use heavy doses of light and dark but also cropped nudes within the frame nicely. The result is a perfect bodyscape image. Due to the striking roundness of the breasts and tilted body position I thought drawing roundish shapes were almost unavoidable. I spotted some nice curves I extrapolated outside the female form. The ones besides her hip culminated into the golden ratio curves. A suitable ending for this year. The ending and the beginning of something entwined, as it should be. So is my search for the eternal and essential in the temporary. Graphite pencil (Faber Castell...
