About the Item

Abraham Walkowitz, Untitled (Figurative Abstraction of Isadora Duncan #7), pencil, 1918. Signed and dated in pencil, bottom center. A fine, spontaneous, figurative abstraction, on cream, wove note paper, in excellent condition. Matted to museum standards. Provenance: Ex. Collection Judy T. Stark, a friend of the artist who danced with Isadora Duncan. ABOUT THIS WORK Abraham Walkowitz (1878-1965) studied at the Cooper Union, the Educational Alliance in New York City, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Students League. He was closely affiliated with the Stieglitz circle and the internationally renowned 291 Gallery. His work is represented in virtually every major American museum. Walkowitz met Isadora Duncan in the sculptor Auguste Rodin’s studio during a trip to France in 1906. After their introduction, Walkowitz watched her dance, bare-foot and free-flowing, at a private salon the following day. The experience inspired Walkowitz to such an extent that he went on to create numerous gestural renderings of her dancing, principally from memory, throughout his lifetime. About Duncan, Walkowitz recalled, “She was a Muse. She had no laws. She didn’t dance according to rules. She created. She was like music. When she moved, it was like the sound of violins; she was the Walt Whitman of women.”

Subtly shaded abstract figurative illustration by Elsa Warnick (American, 1942-2013). Two adult and three baby figures are rendered with subtle tan shading, against an abstract background with geometric shapes and swirling ribbons. One of the two adult figures is laying down, while the other appears to be jumping or dancing. Notable is the skillful use of negative space to balance the composition. Signed and dated "Warnick 1982" in the lower right corner. Signed, titled, and dated with materials information on verso. Presented in a silver aluminum frame. Frame size: 23.5"H x 31.25"W Paper size: 23.25"H x 31"W Elsa Warnick (American, 1942-2013) was born and raised in Tacoma, Washington.
