About the Item

Work is framed with Plexiglass. Signed on the right bottom corner of the drawing. Amilcar's drawings from the series of "Utopia by Tolina" inspired by the imagination of the artist’s five-year-old son, who created a constantly shifting city — a refuge of hope in turbulent times. Amílcar Rivera M.’s works depict silent figures with closed eyes, deeply immersed within themselves: inhabitants of this utopian space. Tolina reflects the human need to imagine a better place and to believe in the possibility of change. Each figure in his paintings appears as an isolated presence in a timeless, undefined space, inviting the viewer to look closer, to study its face and features. Suspended in vast, colour-soaked planes, the figures seem to be waiting, carefully positioned by the artist on the canvas. Yet they resemble fragile toy-like characters, wandering from one painting to another — without beginning or end. Observing Rivera’s works, one inevitably identifies with these Kafkaesque characters, compelled to re-examine the authenticity of one’s own existence. The exhibition title also carries a scientific resonance: “tholins” are complex organic molecules found in the atmosphere of Saturn’s moon Titan. This dual meaning symbolises the connection between play and reality, between intimacy and universal experience. The work is new and will be features at the artists solo exhibition Tolina in Contour Art Gallery, Vilnius, Lithuania from the 4th of September to the 6th of November 2025.

"Untitled, " Oil on Paper - Monochromatic Figurative Drawing
Located in Houston, TX
This minimalist painting on paper is part of a series, which references a mantra of Bhatt’s, “life is a circus.” Floating in space, the characters portrayed in this work play out their roles, while remaining unaware of the full scope of their surroundings. Amita Bhatt received her BFA from the Maharaja Sayajirao University, Vadodara, India and her MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, Maryland. Bhatt’s work has been exhibited at noteworthy venues such as the Bluestar Contemporary Art Center, Walters Art Museum, The Station Museum of Contemporary Art, and The Project Row Houses, all in the United States as well as Museo Pedro de Osma in Peru. She has also been the recipient of several prestigious awards and recently served as a Grant Panelist on the National Endowment for the Arts. Her works are included in many important private and public collections. Bhatt digs deep into world philosophies and mythologies to answer questions pertaining to our political as well as personal belief systems. Unafraid to explore uncomfortable territories, the artist mines from a range of sources to create hybrid creatures that are often symbolic of man’s psychological condition in an angst-ridden zeitgeist. In exploring issues of identity and violence, Bhatt’s research led her to the beginnings of mankind. Most ancient creation...
