Andrea Moreau
South Africa (Apple Trees): Colored Pencil Drawing & Unique Stamp

2018

About the Item

South Africa (Apple Trees): Colored Pencil Drawing & Unique Stamp by Andrea Moreau colored pencil and postage stamp on paper 11 x 11 inches 15 x 15 inches framed This contemporary, intricately drawn color pencil drawing was made by American artist, Andrea Moreau, in 2018. The artist creates her drawings by embellishing the design found in collected postage stamps, which she gathers from her travels around the globe. This specific stamp is from South Africa and features an apple tree surrounded by a highly intricate red pattern. The stamp is highlighted in the middle of the drawing and the artist then embellishes on the image from the stamp, extending it into the further reaches of paper with red colored pencil. The work is complimented by a simple wood frame, measuring 15 x 15 x 1 inches. Artist Statement: My drawings function as personal interpretations of political or commercial propaganda. I begin with imagery found on postage stamps or printed advertisements and, using the visual logic and graphic language of the image, I attempt to tease out a larger framework from which to consider it. Finished pieces often incorporate printed matter and cultural detritus, which gives them an immediate and tactile connection to the world of objects. I am particularly interested in the postage stamp as a geographical artifact, and through my drawing process I attempt to learn something about a place by studying its official imagery and then creating a world beyond the borders of its fragmentary scenes. The finished drawings and paintings are a record of this study; they are a dialogue between the printed and the drawn, the official and the personal, the real and the imaginary. They are a metaphor for the way in which we conjure the places we hear about on the news and read about in books, using the tiniest pieces of information to construct a reality that most likely bears little resemblance to any actual place. About the Artist: Andrea Moreau’s subject of choice; the postage stamp. As unassuming as it might seem, the artist has used this tiny piece of ephemera to inspire imaginative scenes in her work since the mid 90’s. Moreau’s use of stamps began after a trip to Mexico, where she collected a few to bring home and work into her journal. The stamp’s imagery acted as a starting point for detailed colored pencil works on paper that expanded into abstract motifs, figurative drawings, or reimagined landscapes. This creative mediation on the visual souvenir become an “act of escapism” for the artist, allowing her to re-experience her travels in a new way. Now incorporating stamps from places she’s never been, her recent work adopts a reality of its own, forming images based on mere impressions rather than actual experience. The artist received her MFA from Ohio State University and lives and works in Beacon, N.Y.

    By Krzysztof Pastuszka
    Located in Riverdale, NY
Watchmaker is an original Ink and Watercolor Pencil drawing on paper. It is 16x24, unframed. Krzysztof Pastuszka is an interdisciplinary artist who spans sculpture, drawing, engineering, and computer design. Much of his work focuses on the complexity and tension in transition/transitioning, giving voice to his experience growing up as a trans kid in the late 90s -2000s. His process consists of idea generation and the testing and creation of prototypes to generate a multitude of parts. He focuses on mechanical movement and the interplay between parts to visualize the intricacies of change and focus on the necessity of each component's ability to cooperate with another and create movement. He uses motion as a way to expose all the micro-operations and mental acrobatics involved in navigating and rejecting the unchanging nature of cisnormativity. He combines his array of skills to envision and compose an elaborate trail of blueprints archiving the hidden and unseen essence of his trans experience--building documentation that didn't exist in his childhood. His current body of work consists of multiple assemblies within one mechanical sculpture...
