About the Item

Mid Century fauvist French watercolour and gouache on paper of a reclining female figure or Odalisque by Andrée RUY PETROFF. Signed bottom right and presented in green painted wood frame. With quick, energetic and purposeful brushstrokes Ruy has managed to capture the mood of the reclining figure in her costume at ease on a day bed. She has captured the colours and the exotic nature of the subject. Clever use of the brushstrokes to give texture to the layer on layer colour of the background and the vibrant reds in the costume. A very charming and atmospheric painting. This subject matter was made famous by Henri Matisse. Andrée RUY PETROFF knew Matisse through her father and this may explain the inspiration for this painting. Henri Matisse's principal subject during the years 1917 to 1930, known as his early Nice period, was the female figure. Favourite among these was the odalisque. The odalisque was frequently posed among decorative textiles and carpets, cushions and draped fabrics. She was dressed in typical North African costume and depicted standing, seated or reclining. Matisse first came to the theme of the odalisque in Morocco which he visited in 1912 and again in 1913. Morocco provided him with his greatest inspiration outside of France. In these paintings, the lines defining the figure merge with the ornamental material of a couch. The importance of these works concern decorative patterning. Moreover, Paul Cézanne's influence can also be seen be seen in these works in the flattening of space and the interpenetration of foreground and background. The use of exotic clothes and the stress on line and colour distances Matisse aesthetically from the erotic content of the picture. Andrée RUY PETROFF was much influenced by the paintings of her father, André Petroff. She worked and lived in the South of France in Cagnes Sur Mer. She exhibited extensively on the French Riviera and in Japan in Passau. She was commissioned to decorate with paintings the Church of the Holy Family in Cagnes. Ruy Petroff also taught at the cultural center in Cagnes to share her passion for painting to the next generation as she had been inspired by her father. Ruy Petroff also edited and published books on the work of her father.
